coil issues

So my truck started running like dog poop. I limped it home and found the coil was really hot and seeping fluid. Changed it out and its all good for now. What would make that happen? Could it be the contacts in my distributor?

Sometimes the coil will get hot when there is power to it and the motor isn't running like if the key is left on. And, then later when driving, the coil will possibly fail.
