Newbie 6.0 diesel need help
hey guys, first i will say ive been reading some and this site and u guys are great....I Have an 03, f-250, 4x4, AT, crew cab, king ranch, 6.0L,6 inch lift, K&N filter, 99k miles, ive had about 7-8 months and only3k miles, oil and coolant full, sticker from a dealer says change oil at 99k not done yet, , i've done nothing to trk yet, built 05/03, it started with medium rough idle and very low power on take off. then suddenly when this got mostly better it started smoking, now smokes at idle and any rpm. the higher the rpm the more (and darker) the smoke is. its kinda whitish gray at idle and black when floored. symptoms are just like a thread from Raptorhs. from what i read on here it could be many things. but raptorhs was injectors. i am new to fords especially diesels i did have an 05 dodge/cummins (purchased new)but had to sell cuz of job situation at the time.so since it was new and ended up with only 50k i didnt learn much about diesels. I live in apache junction AZ (PHX metro area) i dont have a lot of $ but i know it wont be cheap. does any one know somebody in my area that can properly diagnose my problem? an honest person that wont take advantage? any comments or suggestions greatly appreciated. thx in advance.
That was my original post on main FTE 6.0 diesel page. Since then I pulled, cleaned, replaced,EGR valve w/new o-rings and gasket. Also replaced both fuel filters (motorcraft) no change.
Then I was referred to this local group and was wondering if there was anyone close to me that knows these engines and has the proper tools to diagnose. It would be very much appreciated. I just need someone I can trust.

sounds to me that your compression in the cylinders are low. when i helped my teacher fix his 01 7.3 he had the same problem with the smoke billowing out. turns out he had low pressure in the heads and found 2 of his pistons were broken beyond repair.
i would check that if you need too. its a good full day though, tryin to get to the cylinders
and if i can get my old shop teacher to do it he would probably help ya out. i dont think he charges at all (he has his advanced students do these kind of jobs) but you do need to buy the parts

1) injector stiction look up hot shot secrets oil treatment
2) variable vane turbo coked
3) air filter restriction (not as likely)
4) is the top of the de gauss bottle white (from dried antifreeze) or wet? if so blown egr cooler
#1 and 2 are results of being a grocery getter, this engine was made to run not hop around.
as far as shops in the valley the only one I would recommend is strictly diesel.

the 6.0 is nothing like a 7.3
the 6.0 must have good clean oil as the injectors have very close tolerances and the oil can leave a film on them (internally) and cause them to hang
also the variable vane turbo can coke if the engine isn't cooled down properly after running it.
don't expect to have a shop fix it for a couple hundred bucks, when these thing are broken they are expensive, think thousands going in and be surprised if it doesn't cost that much
