Cam phasers
2004 F-150, 95,000 miles
So after changing spark plugs and a fuel filter, I started having issues with rough idle, missing, and every once in while rough running with the CEL flashing. The flashing CEL would stop after pulling over for a spell, then the the truck would drive fine.
Had a misfire in #3 pop up so I pulled that plug rechecked the gap and switched the COP to try to isolate. That code did not come up again but the cam position sensors did, so at $15 each, I put new ones in.
I then started to get lean codes and cleaning the MAF did not seem to help. The PCV tube was checked and looked to be new with no leaks.
Autozone guys are no in the habit of grabing the code device when they see my truck pull up.
Finally, I took the truck to the dealer and they said everything checked out fine but the cam phasers were making noise. Probable due to not using motor-craft filters. Something about other filters not having some sort of valve in them. I had heard that before so I added some seafoam to the oil and ran her a bit in an attempt to flush the system, then changed the oil, using a motor-craft filter and oil.
So far, no troubles and does not seem to be missing. Of course, I will need to drive it some more before any conclusions, but I am hoping I caught the problem in time which will save me $1500 to get them replaced. Heck, parts alone are $800.
