coil spring question

A little over a year ago I replaced my coil springs. They were cheap ones, and I don't care for them. (I replaced the shocks also)

Today at the salvage yard I saw several trucks with coil springs that looked like they might have been replaced recently. I have an F150, and there were a few F250s which the coil springs looked like they would fit my F150.

Is there a way to test them at the salvage yard?

The best way is to compare measurements from those springs to what you currently have...ie. length and diameter of the coil. If they are the same, then I'd go for it.

just about a year ago i also replaced the springs in my f150. i went with new, but went with f250 springs, they are a bit taller, and have better springrate(hold more wt)
gained almost 6 inches, from where it was sitting with the saggy old springs. i think about 2-2.5in from stock f150 springs. ride quality has not suffered.

if you go that route, you will need to either build a shock spacer or get longer shocks. you will also need to get an alignment, pretty much whatever you do in the front its going to need to be lined up.

I would suggest the Moog 844s that you can get from oreilly for $100. Stock length raised my truck 1.5 inches in the front. Much better ride and handling than factory, too. And for the price, can't beat it.

What truck are you running?

I want to change front coils on my 94 F150 shortbed 4X4. The front has sagged out some, and could use about a 1 1/2"-2" raise as it sits now.

Would this Moog number coil help me, and would I have to get longer shocks? Thanks.

I have a '96 long bed regular cab 4x4. It appears the number may be different for your truck, and will depend on wheelbase, ac/ no ac, etc. But Oreilly does show the Moog springs for that year truck.

Since you would be putting a stock length coil back on, it does not require longer shocks. The spring is stiffer, so that is why the truck sits higher.

Did you get any noticeable lift from the 824 springs?

Hey guys, I know this thread is older, but I was looking for springs today for my 96 150 4X4 A/C 5.8L Shortbed pickup. The problem I am running into, is this truck has duel shock option. Every place(Moog, McClain-Morris or something like that, Federal-Mogul, Spicier, and Moog) and none of them make a spring fro the duel shock option. They tell me the spring is smaller in diameter, and a single shock coil spring will NOT fit. They say Ford don't make them anymore, and I'm not sure I'd wanna hear their price either. If I remove 1 shock, this still doesn't help me, if the new spring is larger, it will still hit that shock. It looks like I have about 3/4" clearance on each side of the spring. So what do I do now??

Moog 844's or F250 front coil springs will lift the front end of an F150 1.5"

Longer shocks are not needed.

CHRGD - Whoever is telling you that obviously doesn't know what they are talking about. The front coil springs are identical between a dual and single shock front end.

WOW! I appreciate the info. The people who are telling me this are the customers service people from Moog, McClain-Morris, Federal-Mogel and such. I took their word because of who they are, and they seemed to know exactly what I was talking about, and said it won't work.

I am going to get some outside diameter measurements, and compare to the single shok coil.

Thanks again for the info.

They sound like the auto parts store guys.

They don't work for Ford. They did not design and build these trucks. I don't know what they are going off of, but how cost effective would that be if Ford had to make 2 different front coil springs for single vs. dual shock front ends on the assembly line?

The only difference between whatever you have in there and whatever you get, say the 844s, is height.

Very good, that makes it real easy! I wouldn't have thought there would have been 2 different springs, but thats why I called customer service. All the books we looked at said except dual shock option. And there was no listing for the dual shock option. Thats why we called them in the first place. So now I just need to decide on a height. I'd like to see about 1"-1.5". Thanks again.
