Towing weight differences between manual and automatic

I have a 2002 Sport with the manual transmission, and just installed a trailer hitch. When I was reviewing the towing specs I was quite surprised by the substantial difference in trailer weight capacity between the automatic (max 5060 lbs) and the manual (max only 3000 lbs).

I know there have always been differences in towing capacity between manual and auto, but it wasn't all that long ago when it was the automatics that had the lower tow rating. Sure, automatics have come a long way since those days, but I am understandably curious... why does the manual have such a lower weight rating than the automatic? Is it the clutch? The gearing? Overheating? 2000 lbs is a big difference when you consider that everything else (engine, axial, frame) is basically the same.

Fortunately my towing needs don't exceed capacity, but I'd be curious to hear any stories from folks who have towed with a manual, and how far they've been able to push it on the weight requirements, or what sort of issues might I want to watch out for by towing with a manual.

Technology, computer controlled transmissions make
A big difference.

Towing with a manual is all about clutch control.

Both good points... put that way it makes a lot more sense.
Thanks Darren!
