Timing position is way off !!! 5.0L

I have been experiencing pinging under acceleration and in between gear shifts. Pull out the timing light, and the timing mark on the balancer is about 180* from where it should be. It shows up at about the 4-5 o'clock position. The timing tab is at about the 10-11 o'clock position. What gives?

A couple of possibilities:

1. The outer ring on the damper has slipped, and is now sitting where it shouldn't. See if the rubber between the outer ring and inner hub is all torn up. If so, it's broken, and you will have to replace it.

2. Your distributor, or the wires on the rotor, are not installed correctly.

Perhaps you are not timing it with #1 cylinder.

Yes a good possibility. #1 cyl is passengers side front, and the spout plug in the TFI harness has to be removed to disable computer ignition advance when setting the base timing.

No you don't unplug the TFI module just the little spout plug(jumper) in the TFI harness... it's a little grey thing hanging off two wires near the module.
