In the fuel mileage dept., my 2001 F250 PSD, 3:73, 4R100, 140,000 miles, heavy ole truck just produced 21.88 mpg at 68 mph (760 mi.). It has the HyperTech PPIII IN IT. has had for 128,000 miles. It is a good truck. I hope my 05 develops into something close to that.

Gents, (and ladies, as appropriate):
1999 7.3 6 speed factory stock (no cat. converter) F250 except for NAPA Gold air filter and helper springs for the 12000 pound gooseneck trailer gives me 18 to 23 mpg empty on the interstate. With trailer, 11-14 (depending on wind and terrain) running on the interstate at 62 to 65 mph. This sounds pretty good after reading the thread(s) on fuel efficiency.

I have 131k miles of which at least 2/3 are with a trailer in tow. Service is at 5k miles interval. Oil is still clean enough to read the dip stick even at 5k. Engine uses 1/2 to 1 quart of Rotella between changes. Most of my driving is on Texas interstates and rural highways.

I have driven a lot of vehicles and am totally in awe of the 7.3 PSD. Ford did a good job of putting this monster together and making sure it will stay together.

Wow, talk about resurecting a old thread...

Chalk me up in the column for improved mpg with a tuner (there are many, many of us), and I don't have the mpg meter either...

In all reality, a tonneau is a wise investment that often yeilds a mpg or two.

A tonneau cover would probably be more reliable at giving you a fuel mileage boost than would a chip - after all, with a chip, you will want to put your foot in it more, negating some - or all - of the benefit.

Since I am new here, I posted in the wrong place. I went back and did it right. Sorry if it bothered you.

Didn't bother me in the slightest
Do see some names here that I haven't see for a while though...

Anyhow,
Keep those tires pumped up and aligned.
And keep the right foot off the loud pedal.

I do keep the foot light on the pedal. I did the math and found the calculated top speed is about 110 mph. I don't feel the need to test that calculation. 65-70 is plenty fast for me.

It's interesting that nobody has mentioned wheels and tires in a discussion about increasing fuel economy. Or tire inflation. Rolling resistence will make it or break it.

Tire inflation is an interesting issue, I would rather over inflate a tire and wear it prematurely than have the extra drag, tires are expensive and all but diesel has gotten out of control !

I am curious of the mileage claims if people are using the pen and paper or the computer. With the 285 tires I seem to be more accurate on the odometer than before but tire size has to be considered in the mileage, people need to give more info than I get 18 MPG if they expect anyone to give it a second thought.

I don't have accurate #'s for the mileage of my truck (02 CC F350 SRW) and I am not sure I want to know, it's just the cost of driving.

I think I will take a few readings and see what I am getting because I am thinking about going to a straight pipe. I hear that will increase mileage and get a bit more power.

Ford recommends (iaw my owner's manual) 55psi front and 60 rear. I run 60 front and 65 rear, unless towing very heavy. Then 70 front and 75 rear. When I forget to let the pressure off after towing, my wife compains loud and clear about the rough ride, until we check fuel mileage. We have gotten as good as 23.5, empty, 65mph, no wind/hills.

As soon as you go over 2000 rpms you mileage is going to drop.

Keep your foot out of it if you want better mileage, if you don't live with the MPG you are getting.

Are the guys with chips actually doing a calculation to obtain fuel milage or are you just looking at the onboard computer?
I understand when a chip is installed it messes with milage reading the computer provides. Making every one believe they are getting 21-24 mpg.

Most of the Superduty PSD trucks do not have mpg calculators, just the plush higher end models.

I have actual hand calculations showing a solid 2 mpg gain....but I only see that gain if I keep my foot off the floor board.

I jumped from 16 mpg to 18 mpg on just the diablo 60 Hp economy tune. Now that I have installed my extang RT tonneau, I've even picked up a tad more.

Yeah. I have a XL model. It has no computer. I guess I'm lucky it has a trip meter...
