how much does re-gearing usually cost?

Depends on what gears and what you get replaced during the install (overhaul kit and etc) but figure around the $2k mark with labor. (Best to get quotes) If doing it yourself you can cut that down to just parts and some tools and save a lot of money IF you do it right.
