Cat C7

Anybody familiar with the Cat C7 motor?

Looking at a couple old (2005-6) Penske box trucks with the C7. A couple have the Acert designation. Think that has to do with emissions (EGR maybe?)

Anything particular to look out for. Mileages ranging from 93k up to mid 100's. One has an Eaton-Fuller 6-spd auto, the rest are 6-spd sticks.

Auction coming up Thursday. Thanks.

good runners, with good power. the only thing i would worry about is lack of maintenance.

I would stay away unless it's a heck of a deal...

First of all, ACERT was Cat's strategy to meet EPA 2003 emissions requirements without EGR...and it relied on higher boost pressures, variable lift valves, and a high degree of computer control. ACERT = Advanced Computer controlled Emissions Reduction Technology if I remember right...

Caterpillar left the market in 2010 due to the vastly decreased market share they had combined with the increased emissions requirements for that year. I drove a couple company trucks with C15 ACERTs, and they were decent running engines. But make sure you have a FAT wallet if something goes wrong!

I'd look for the much more common DT466...

Thanks, Tom and Tom

So, any C7 after 2003 should be the Acert stuff I guess. Makes sense since that's when they started with the EGR controls. Pre-2007 should be no DPF, right? Did emissions controls for commercial trucks phase in at the same time as the light truck market?

Thanks again
