diesel sound in cab?
I had the poortunity to spend the weekend with my fathe in laws 99 PSD. I could obviously hear the diesel while driving but it wasn't bad or anything. Easy to hold a conversation etc.
Of course I am looking for an older idi because I don't have 13k to buy a PSD. However my brother in law says that it will he extreamly loud in the cab compared to the PSD. He said it is to the point where you can't carry on a normal conversation. That kind of bothers me because I want a diesel to pull my travel trailer and travel cross country with my family.
If there is a noise issue is it taken care of with sound deadening material?
Thanks!

Yes, sound deadening material does wonders. That said, you need to find an IDI and take it for a test drive with the family to know what you're getting as far as noise goes. My wife hated my 02 PSD until I had dynamat installed in the doors and floor pan. It made a big difference. I did not do the firewall or hood because it got to the point she was OK with it. I could have also done the back of the cab and the roof, but didn't see the need for the extra expense.

My F250 wasn't bad at all.....for engine noise.
The wind noise was horrible on the highway though.
And my E350 camper is pretty loud inside the cab... but the engine is more inside the cab than it is outside so it's understandable. To talk up front, we have to talk pretty loud to hear each other.
At least the sound of an IDI roaring is a great sound to drive to

Do I prefer an idi to a psd? Well I have to right now cause I can't afford a psd and even if I could I couldn't afford to pay someone to work on it. My buddy has a 99 f250 psd and I would rather have it just cause it has more power and its a 6 speed but when he has to put new injectors in it to the tune of 1500 bucks I'm glad I have my good ole idi's!

the idi's are quieter than the powerstrokes (this excludes the new 6.7l)
we have good rattle, but if you park beside a cummins,or psd, you'd likely find the idi gets drowned out by either.
our engines are almost/just about as loud as the 7.3l psd when the cold advance is on.after that though,we're much quieter.
soundproofing + diesel trucks = success though.
i just went over my factory hood insulation with more, just last night before nightfall actually.every bit i add makes a huge difference.
all i have left to do is the firewall (engine side) now.
all depends on how much time you spend in your cab too.i can put on upwards of 20k + miles per year.you know how old, road/engine noise gets real fast? no thanks.i'll take my clean, clear tunes please.
