Special oil pan, headers & aftermarket intake (if you want to keep stock hood) as well as some stock or modified front dress. All available from Summit & Ford Racing Performance Parts. Yes, its been done a lot. Cruise & search any of the bigger Mustang forums or look through Muscle Mustang & Fast Fords magazine on line or 5.0/Super Ford magazine on line for some older articles/reprints for info.

Any SBF head will do, the 90 5.0 is not going to be any BIG advantage over leaving the 96 5.8s where they are.

well right now i have a 5.0 in the car with aluminum gt 40 heads, and i have a bbk intake manifold that i would use. hood height would not be a problem i have a 4" cowel hood. and your saying you think there wont be a big advantage with the 351 over the 302?

No, what I was saying is that there is not a big difference in stock heads. More cubic inches will always make more power than fewer. The swap is certainly worth it, by all means, use the aluminum GT-40 heads.

The BBK intake is another matter. a 5.8 is wider across the intake/lifter valley than a 5.0 & (its intake) will not just bolt on. However, there IS a company that make adaptor plates that will allow one to use a 5.0 intake on a 5.8

These people:

Price Motorsport

Using one of these:

Intake Adapters

(Click on one to see what they look like)

I would recomend calling them & asking exactly what they would recomend.

We did the same swap but used a 95 truck 351 and a 89 mustang. We had the motor in but had a real hard time bolting the bellhousing up. So we pulled the motor out and bolted the the bellhousing and tran up, had to pull the shifter out of tranny, son climbed up on car windshield and front roof and pushed the tranny end down. Then I pushed the engine hoist in with motor, lowered it in, fit like a glove. He went with a carb. Got all the parts from a local racer. loves it

I've seen one the girls i knew from High school(real good looking too ) take a 5.0 out and throw a 7.5 in an 89 mustang, so i know its definitly possible.

I myself put a 351W in my 83 Capri. (Mercury version of the Mustang) Yes it fits great and I did it all under the stock hood with Ford OE parts. It is very easy and the hardest part was waiting till I got it done to drive it. I do belie the 5.8L head bolts are bigger then the 5.0L so the heads will need to be drilled for them. Other then that just make sure you have the right water pump ect. I know the mustangs used a reverse flow not sure on the trucks tho.

yea i heard of doing that to, i think i made a big mistake i had a 429 block and sold it 4 months ago because i needed money that would have been awsome to put in but this 351 swap seems to require alot less work and the transmission will bolt right up. plus i have a mildly built 302 i can swap most of the parts

The head bolts on the 351w are 9/16 and a 302 uses 1/2. You need to drill out the 302 heads to fit. Not hard to do.

Almost.... 302 use 7/16 bolts and the 351 is 1/2".

This part you got right, I have done this on my drill press.. no biggy at all.

As for the swap idea overall.. yeah it's a Great idea and increasingly popular too. Some idiots that have done it or more likely.. know somebody that has done it claim the car is no faster or even slower.. but in the same breath say the car now has serious traction problems in the first two gears. Gee.. I wonder why the car is no faster?
With all the main parts from the 5.0 transferred over(heads, cam, intake)the 5.8 will make the same peak horsepower your 5.0 makes now but it will make it 500-1000 rpm lower, and the 5.8 will make more TQ at 2000 rpm than the 5.0 makes peak, so you're gonna have to learn how to drive the car all over again.. and get some real sticky tires for it.

With a mustang , i would just stroke the 302 to a 347 , you get the TQ of a 351 , but the 302 is lighter and will rev quicker and have more RPM , thats what i like in a stang....

This is what I'd do myself... Or buy a built one from one of the big reseller names. But if you have the 351 go for it!
