Lightbulb Heart Transplant- 1972 F250 with the New Boss 6.2L?

Hey guys, here it is, I was planning on doing an engine swap a while back from a 390 to a 460, ended up selling the 460 for school and stuff, now that 390 in my 72 F250 CS SC is my daily driver as well, Was thinking of how itd be nice and find another motor to do a swap with in the future and BAM!! What do you guys think about taking the heart of a 2010 Ford Raptor, 6.2L 374cu I believe which i also believe is apart of the BOSS collection.., and all electronics seats everything, into my truck?
Obviously I would start with a donor truck but Id like to hear from you guys any problems with the motor, fitment, etc..... Let me know
Yes I am sure some of you say no, keep it stock, but I want to get another daily driver that gets decent MPG but I dont want stop driving my truck, Thus my solution.....Put a daily driver in my truck!!!

Sounds like a fun project with one exception, the MPG part. Have fun with the truck, get an Escort for the mpgs.

I really think it would be better mpg than a 460. Be brave, bite the bullet, and do it.

I doubt a raptor will come cheap. Find a 4valve lincoln mark or better yet a 96-98 cobra motor, put a small turbo on it and you will probably be time and $ ahead. I have seen wrecked cobras in the 4k range that ran and had the computer and everything. STOCK cobra motors with turbos have seen 1000hp. I doubt the new raptor motor will hang with that. 4 valvers just look better too!

Well yea it would be cheaper but I need more than just the engine, i bought a center console out of one last year at a goodguys show, and have designed a way to incorporate both interiors, ill try and post my sketch, but i figured i could probably get all the interior stuff out of any platinum ford or new F150 and find a motor wiring harness trans, etc out of the raptor at one of my local junkyards.... and im not against the cobra motor, but i just like the idea of taking a motor from a new truck and putting it in a classic..

here is one of my interior ideas incorporating the touch screen dash, vintage air controls in the center ipod plug in at the lower smaller opening and a small compartment at the bottom where it turns into the column, incase its hard to picture, square to the right is the glove box, and far left there is the guage cluster, have sketches from other angles to.... im not a drawer so try not laugh at these just let me know what you think

For my '68 F250 Ranger C/S, I swapped my tired 360 for a tow built 428 PI and picked up a ton of power and much better mileage. A 428 will pretty much swap in bolt for nut to replace your 390.

I'm surprised you're only getting 8 MPG, the 390 must be pretty tired or way out of tune.

Good advice about the Escort, I bought a '98 XZ2 coupe for $1000, did some mods and it is quick fun little car for around town and gets 36+ MPG on the road and 30 in town. Check Craigslist or the classifieds on this site:

I bought the engine as a long block, and put int, runs good and all but the place i bought the engine from is Now known for selling bad engines, like incorrect internals... id rather put money into getting this swap done as opposed to figuring out whats wrong with the 390

Without spending any money, I'd check the compression, cam/distributor timing, vacuum leaks, ignition components and carb set up on the 390. Not much the rebuild shop could do to affect MPG's other than using the wrong or a flat lobe cam or installing it a tooth off. The rebuilt 390 should give you good service if it is set up correctly. What carb are you running? The Edelbrock 650 is a nice fit for that engine and is very tunable re metering rods, jets etc. My 428 gets around 11-12 MPG towing 7K-8k lbs and around 14-15 empty (2WD, C6 with 3:73 axle).

Ive checked everything except the compression, and its all good, im running a 750 edelbrock carb thats been tuned and what not, its the carb that came with the blown 390 when i got the truck, it works and looked brand new, figured o could use it. passes emissions with flying colors every time

You need to pitch that over size carb, that is costing you some mpgs. You engine only needs about 500 cfms of carb. You are dumping gas on the road through the tail pipe.

^^^ ditto ^^^ A 750 CFM is a lot more carb than you need, even jetted down and with leaner metering rods. Google CID+CFM and you will find calculators...just enter your intended max RPM and it will give you a good starting point. Something from 500-650 CFM should work fine and allow tuning. I would try to get the rebuilt 390 running right before dumping big buck$ on a swap....the money you spend on a new engine and installation doesn't compute compared to the amount of fuel you would save vs the extra gas you could buy with the same $$$. You can likely sell the 750 on eBay or CL and buy a smaller Edelbrock or Holley plus a tuning kit with the money.

Well I've got a buddy who practically collects carba and rebuilds maybe I'll swap him for a rebuilt one and see what happens. Getting back to the swap, any ideas on if I'll need to mock up some engine mounts or could I use a swap kit out of lmc or something and there shouldn't be a by clearence issues with the transmission right?

The 6.2 would be cool but the headaches of installing a OBDII + CAN BUS is a crap shoot! The OBDII not so hard but when you throw CAN into it it becomes very hard as all the subsystems feedback to the ECM!
