first of many questions

Hi my name is Greg and I am very happy to have found FTE. I look forward to being a part of this forum.

I have a 66 F 100, 352 with three on the column. I have already started a list of mods that I will have many questions on in the future. FYI: I know just enough to get myself in trouble. That's why i'm happy to have found you folks.

First question: Is it feesible to change my 2x4 to a 4x4, and if so what parts do I need to start looking for?

hey, i'm new here too, you will learn a lot from these people, so stick around.

i have a 1966 F-250. i have a "twin I-beam" front suspension. if you have this, i don't think it will be worth it to make it a 4x4. you will need to replace almost everything.

i'd wait to hear from the more knowlegable guys before you make any decisions from only what i say though.

This is a major swap you're talking about here. It requires removing everthing off of the front of your truck, even the motor and probably motor mounts. Steering will probably have to be changed, and transmission will have to be changed, unless you want a divorced setup. If you're measurements aren't exactly correct you will never be able to get your front end aligned right. I wouldn't recommend doing this unless you know this is what you want, and you know how to make everything work together. This will not be a bolt up swap. I would do some more research on this, try running a search. Hope this helps out a little bit.

Sooo much better off finding an old 4x4 frame. I seriously looked into doing the same conversion...and wisely gave up. I will try to find a 4x4 later.

The conversion would be easy if you find a 66-72 f100 4x4 frame to put your body on. The biggest differences that I found was the steering box and shaft is specific to the 4x4 and the inner fenders and core support off the 66 would need to be used with slight modificaton to the left side for the steering box and shaft. I am about 80% done with a 66 f100 4x4 restoration and have found the diiference between the 2x4 and 4x4 to be minor if you have the frames.

It al depends on how bad you want a 66 f100 4x4. I could be fairly cheap if you find a beeter donor. Figuring the cost of your time, it is probably cheaper to buy one complete

Hi Greg:
Welcome aboard! One other thought, considering you are looking to the 4x4 over the 2x4. Look for a donor late model and swap over the body. I know a few recommendations are the 78-79 model years as they are the closest comparison to the 66 and you would get all the benfits up updated technology with disks and a tank under your bed... There are a few cut and weld mods required, but I defer to the experienced for those.
Enjoy!, --MG
