thinking about buying F250 HD

well the truck is a 97 but to get better input from people who own the trucks in the earlier years.
1997 Ford F-250 HD XLT For Sale in Green Bay, WI | Broadway Automotive
-im just currious what type of mpg i would be looking at?(not to worried if is only 10mpg)
-am i able to get a programmer for this year?

its got
-7.5l/460
-5spd
-4x4
-106,000miles
-airbags on the back
downsides
-being sold in the car lots bargain corral(sold AS IS)
-transmission grinds a little down shifting

other weise i took it for a drive and it seems good, when i took it for a drive a couple weeks(maybe 4 weeks) ago they wanted $8,300, now they dropped the price to $6,300. it seems like a good price to me

right now i got a 93 f150 with the 4.9l 136,000miles, 5spd i recently got a zf transmission re done and installed but im thinking about upgrading to some thing newer or that will last at least 10yrs, i know the 4.9l is a great motor but mine has problems with burning oil, and on labor day 2010 i hydrolocked the motor, and when i rebuilt it i did the rings and it still burns oil.
-but since i put the transmission in 3 weeks ago the truck has drove good, and i had hauled my bronco 50 miles to go mudding then had to make 3 more trips back and forth to get the other broken trucks home. but it seems like it did good towing but i think i can use a little more power towing.

i got a 12,000lb trailer to tow my 86 bronco mud truck to go mudding, and of course other trucks too.

just let me know your opinions please.

-Cant use a programmer, thats an OBD 1 truck (ford f250/350 was obd 1 till 1998 when super duty came out). I mean unless you can findone, but they wouldnt do much I doubt.
-460/7.5L will get 10-12mpg all the time loaded or not.
-Trans will probably need rebuild or at least looked at for grinding problem.
-I wouldnt pay that kinda cash for something with a trans problem. Maybe 3k. the dealer knows it, offer them your price and tell them to take it or leave it. If they dont take it there will always be another one.
-your gonna tow regularly look into the diesel, much better power and capable of towing the bronco.

i would search this section a LOT before deciding.
i think you'll find that 10 mpg (true average now, forget what the thing can peak from time to time.that hardly counts, and your wallet wont care if you hit 11 or 12 once or twice lol) is being generous for a 460 4x4 truck.
im just saying, use the search feature before pulling the trigger.fuel isn't priced cheap these days.
i think after an hour or two searching here, you'll find the general consensus for such a truck on a whole will generally yield a more realistic 6-8 mpg true honest average, and that is NOT when talking about pulling your 12k trailer with load around either.....yes,it will be lower under those conditions.
do yourself a huge favor and just spend some time searching.
then decide.

96 and 97 are OBDII with the exception being F-350 chassis cabs classified as HD. I dont know if you can program them of not, but you can read codes with an OBDII scanner. when I had my 1997 F-250HD, and the F-350 (both powerstrokes) Programmers were just coming out, and I had a 3-way chip back in the day.

I liked my 97s a lot, and I like my 460s. if its in good shape, seems like a good price.

96 F-250HDs are OBD-1. The diesels were OBD-II, the 460 was not.

yeah cause i have the same transmission in my f150 right now and it cose $600 to get it rebuilt. that was i was thinking when i first went to look at it, was why sell it AS IS with a bad trans. the price was high, like you say if it was 3k it wouldnt be too bad. i was thinking bout waiting a year and trading my f150 for a new f150 with a 5.0l. or 6.2l, or go get a newer f250 if i can find a 7.3l for a good price or go new with the 6.7l.

i was thinking a used new, like a 2011 that is on a used lot, cause the new ones loose so much value when you drive them off the lot.

im kindof leaning towords this truck to casue it is kind of what i want, to be able to work on the engine if i have to and i was also looking for a 05-06 pontiac GTO but if i get this with a big motor i got a truck and a big motor. 10-12mpg still isnt bad, i might go in and offer them $4k take it or leave it
i like this body style and so far i seen no rust, i knocked on main areas and head nothing different, i will bring a bagnet next time, i might talk to the bank and see if i can get a little extra to get the transmission fixed and sell my f150 with a rebuilt trans, or take the money from selling the f150 and fix the trans

too much money with a basd trans.

Had a trans shop for 15 yrs and that trans"" quality built"" will go for about $1800.00

Personally I would not go over $3000.00 tops.

I manage an Autozone, we scan codes. I scanned an OBDII 1996 F-250 this afternoon. some late 95s have OBDII as well the only 96-97s I have seen w/o OBDII are chassis cabs and superduties (F-450)

My '97 F250HD is OBDI/SD. Doesn't have a rear O2 sensor or an airbag (SRR) either. It's a 5.8L/E4OD combo. Is it possible that in '96, the F250 LD was OBDII, where the F250HD (8600GVW) was still OBD-I? I'm thinking its possible the GVW rating determined the classification of the truck and whether it was required to be OBDII compliant or not. I pulled my tach cluster out of another '97 F250HD w/a 460 and it was OBDI/SD as well.

Bear13861........yours may possibly be OBDII/MAF if it's a CA emissions truck (?).

Yes. Its a CA em. truck... So the OBD2 Cali forces the transition away from OB1... Figured but I still have my OB2.
