I've had the same issue with my '01 5.4L but mine doesn't do it all the time. Changed the plugs and it got a little better but still sputters under moderate acceleration and/or when it's under load like going up a hill. Sucks that others are having the same issue but glad I'm not the only one.

Yep tonite I went and swapped out one of the original COD's and the one on the #4 hole I replaced in Feb. and guess what... Bingo' Bango no more sputtering! wth? It was my last resort after replacing the other 7 3 week ago and no change. I hope and pray that this is the last of this sputting problem. Why would that COD burn out again? Now it did seem that the plug for that COD did not "snap" into place.

There really is no snap like an older plug wire sine the connector is a spring instead

Glad you hopefully figured out your issue, looks like I'll be getting some COPs soon. What kind did you end up going with?

Brief and incomplete guide to cure sputtering, missing or stumbling.

Speedo and ABS light = VSS sensor (on rear differential)

Sputtering at idle or just off idle on 2V engines (2004 and older) then check/clean/replace IAC (Idle Air Control valve)

Sputtering, missing, stumble at speed, check for COPs, plugs and boots. Scan for PENDING codes.

Stumble or power loss under load, check fuel pressure, fuel filter, possible exhaust restriction such as a bad cat.

I had the same issue. Fixing the vacuum hose solved the issue. When I have a chance, I'm going to replace all of the vacuum lines.

Ok guys. I'm having this same kind of problem with my 02 expedition. I have changed the fuel pump, fuel filter, cop's, plugs, egr valve, crank position sensor and it still misses during idle and driving it also bucks real hard while driving and taking off from a stop. What else could be the problem? I'm running out of ideas everything that I have found on the Internet and tried hasn't fixed the problem yet. I really need to get this fixed it's costing me a ton!

Went through pretty much same process. Work with the easy, less-expensive items first. Each item made a small improvement, but never cured it.

Once I replaced the COP's all was smooth again!!! I doubt I had 8 bad COP's but didn't feel like dealing with another one dropping out in the near future nor did I feel like troubleshooting which one was bad!!

Glad you got her fixed.

To the last guy, did you clean your IAC?

Jason,

Idle Air Control (IIRC). It was located on the back of the throttle body on my 2002 F250 5.4L. It is held on by two bolts and has a hose connected to it.

It is really back there but it can be removed w/o removing the throttle body. They get all caked up with crap. If you pull it out, you can spray it down and reinstall.

If you need to replace the TPS or clean the throttle body, you may be better off pulling out the throttle body with those items still attached which will make them easy to access.

There are plenty of threads on here about R&R and cleaning of the IAC.
