02 dies while running please help

My father in-law has a 2002 7.3 powerstroke and it starts and runs fine. Then all of a sudden it will die or sometimes if he stops somewhere and goes to restart it, it will turn over but no start..... If we let it sit for an hour or two and try to start it, it will fire right up!!!!!! He can then drive it home and shut it off and it will have the same problem! I can hear the fuel pump turn on but i know nothing about diesels.... So is there a common problem that causes that? There is no check engine light or anything!

Please reply with any suggestions.

Welcome to FTE. The most common weak link on these motors is the CPS. It's worth trying that. Don't get one from the local parts house, only get one from Ford or International. They will call it a CMP sensor and it should run around $25. You can change it with these instructions Welcome to guzzle's CPS R&R Web Page< Keep the old CPS as a spare in the glove box just in case.

If it happens again, have him pay close attention to all the lights on the dash. When he turns the key on, the glow plug light should come on and go off after a few seconds. Do any of the other dash lights stay on or not come on like normal? Any flash while cranking? Are there any other symptoms?

Ford had a CPS Recall, Did your Father-in-law have this done? A Dealership will change this out for Free if it was not done yet. Ask for the old CPS back as that may or may not be your problem and it is good to have a spare.. While at the Dealership check for anyother 'Recalls' that may need to be done to the truck.

If the truck is Chipped, make sure that you change it back to Stock before taking it to the Dealer and ask to stay in/with the truck while it is being worked on (no, I/we do not trust d/Stealers).... and watch what the 'tech' is doing to your truck and 'ask' what he is doing, and why.

What was happening with my truck when I was having 'dying' problems.... it was the CPS, but it was getting moisture paste the o-ring when I drove through a water puddle in the rain (started back up every timeit 'died').... I sealed it up with a new o-ring and electric grease.... no problems since... This may be your only problem and worth a try before going to a Stealer or buying a new CPS

Today when I changed the cps I drove it about 4 miles down the road, shut the truck off, then restart and drove home, but about a mile from the house the engine just shut off! Like as if I turned the key off. Everything else gauges, etc were still working. And of coarse no re-fire! I walked home and went back 3 or 4 hours later and started right up!
