Getting Ready for Swap

Picked up a Mercedes OM617 Diesel to swap into my 66. I have to rebuild the trans, and get oil and trans coolers for it.

My son is a Mercedes tech, so he kind of talked me into it.

Hopefully picking up the Crown Vic frond suspension on Friday so I can get started.

Pretty cool, and very different. The idea of a diesel swap these day sure is getting attention. Like to see what it gets mpg when done.

I'll update when I get started. Think I have the drive shaft mods figured out.
There's minimal wiring on the motor, but speedometer is electronic, so I need to do some mods there.

I've been running a OM617.951 from a 82 300SD in my 53 F100 for almost 5 years now. It is a simple swap, easiest motor mounts I have ever had to make.
If you have any questions just ask

Thanks Jeff.

That's the same motor I have, and the 722.3 auto trans.

Did you use a Mercedes drive shaft, or an adapter to bolt to the yoke on the back of the trans?

Also, what about your shifter and throttle linkages?

I have a bunch of items I still haven't figured out yet, oil and trans coolers, return fuel lines, egr removal, vacuum lines,...

Your help will be appreciated.

Bill

I'm hoping to be able to pick up the Crown Vic front end this week so I can start tearing down. Scrap yards around here want to sell suspension by separate parts, and they have a core charge for some of the pieces. Found a guy who sells them, but it's a 3 hour drive each way. Good price, so I'll be taking a road trip.

Pulled front suspension from pick and pull yard last week. Sure would have been easier if I had an impact and a torch handy though. Found one about an hour away, and even though I thought I brought every tool I thought I needed, that never works out.

Pulled the 240 yesterday, and have the new cross member temporarily sitting in the frame. Will clean everything and start boxing the frame this week I hope.

I Haven't ever really looked into the crown Vic swap in these trucks before. Is it hard to do? Looks like it matches up to the truck frame decently. Sorta looks like a bolt in almost install?

Go on the Mustang Steve website. He's doing the Crown Vic F100 conversion. looks to be a fairly straight foreward conversion and has some pictures. Email or post on his site and he'll help you out

Set the motor in the frame over the weekend to make sure there would be no surprises later. Plenty of room.

Still need to box the frame and make some motor mounts.
