Best 6.0 Oil??
#61
Find the person who told you never to use Rotella in a 6.0. Take a picture of him and write down his address so you never forget him. Now, run Forrest, run away from that evil stupid man!
Mobil 1 for Turbo Diesel Trucks is a fine oil as is Shell Rotella T6. I used TDT back when it was the same formula as Mobil Delvac 1.
Delvac 1 is probably the best diesel engine oil, but it's expensive. I consider Mobil 1 for turbo diesel trucks and Shell Rotella functionally equivalent. Both show excellent performance in 6.0 engines. You can buy a gallon of T6 at Walmart for $20.56.
I don't use Delvac 1 simply because running extended oil change is a really poor idea. Group IV synthetics like Delvac 1 make economic sense for long change intervals. Less expensive Group III + oils like TDT and T6 give you the cold start / cold weather benefits and w40 high temperature performance without the extra cost of a long oil change interval Group IV oil being dumped every 5,000 or 7,500 miles.

Wonder how well that works when its in your engine and it won't flow.....

I buy Rotella T 15w40 200 Gal at a time and run it in Cat C-15s in semi trucks, John Deere tractors and combines, and several PSDs. Never had a problem with it, never had an oil related failure in 15+ years. Fired up some pretty big motors in some very cold weather and the oil pressure always comes right up. I think it flows as well as any other at -10 or -15 which is about as cold as it ever gets around here.

Put Rotella on my back porch in the winter (-40'F) right next to a gallon of Mobil-1 TDT..... Then try to pour them out at that temp. The Mobil-1 will pour and The Rotella......well if you drop it the plastic container will break and you can peel the plastic off the nice bottle shaped chunk of oil. You could then use that chunk of oil to hammer a nail.

it is not the brand it is the viscosity that plays that role.

Check the Rotella T6 Cold Pour Point here. It's -45C. That's -49F.
http://www-static.shell.com/static/c...cants/1-52.pdf
Mobil doesn't even list the Cold Pour Point for TDT since changing the formula.
Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel Truck 5W-40
Delvac 1 ESP's Cold Pour Point is -48C. TDT used to be relabled Delvac 1. It no longer is.
Mobil Delvac 1 ESP 5W-40
Check the difference in flash points. Delvac1 ESP is 248C, TDT is 215C. That's an indicator of Group IV vs. III. By the way, T6's flashpoint beats TDT's. It's 224C.

I bought some 0w40 Rotella for my next oil change. I was wondering also about driving down south with it. But since it is 40 weight, I would think it is as good as 15w40 in hot wheather. 0w40 or 15w40 will adapt to temperature.
I read also that Ford has approved 5w40? So this is good news. May be I will be running 0 w40 all year.

Because Rotella T6 is not 15w-40), it's 5w-40 - same as Mobil 1 TDT.
Try not to drop that frozen gallon on your head for a second time!

15W40=15w40, no matter the brand, it will be like frozen Molasse at minus 40. 5W40 or 0w40 will turn much better at lower temps. If you live in a mild winter area you will be find with 15W40.
I think Rotella has proven by the many user on this forum to be a very good oil. There is no proof that a good oil brand will be better than another good oil brand, it is just a matter of preference.

Hey, this is an old thread, I realize. Just seemed like a better place to make an oil-related comment than opening a new thread.
I just had an indy shop replace my oil cooler--did not need a new oil cooler, but he had to tear down to that level to replace O-Ring seals on oil cooler so I had him replace oil cooler.
This supposedly experienced mechanic was not at all familiar with my oil--Mobil Delvac 1 ESP 5w-40 Synthetic. All he seemed to hone in on was the "5w" in the viscosity rating. He told me the oil was too thin and that I should run Motorcraft 15w-40.
Hate to hear this sort of nonsense from a diesel mechanic.
Opinions?

I now use Amsoil 5-40 synthetic year round. Found it better for cold starts and slightly extended oil change intervals. They say good till 600 hours, but thats hard to believe. My truck can idle for up to 13 hours a day and find the oil change at 400 hours to be about right. That is still better than the 250 hours usually recommended for standard oil. Cost is a little more but downtime is reduced.
