Glock 17, what do yall think about it ?

I am going to a gun show a couple weeks from now and i am thinking about getting a glock 17 ( when i say i,i mean me and my parents).
We were wanting a glock because my mother who has problems with her hands could pull the slide back on a glock if she ever needed to use it, hopefully that is never going to happen. This gun is going to be our first gun we have owend since me and my brothers were born so we were wanting some thing my little brother could use at the range also he is 9, i am 14 and a half and i am pretty strong i weigh 170 and i am 5'11 so i thing i could use most of the hand guns out there, my father was in the army for 5yrs and has owend many guns in the past before we were born so he is not a stranger when it comes to guns.
I was wanting to hear what you think about the glock 17(9mm), yes i know that caliber is not ideal for a gun, for home defense my father and i were just getting my mothers feet wet she has been the drawback on having a gun and she feels comfortable with a 9mm, and is kinda afraid of the 45. my father was drooling over in the gun shop, and she said absoblutly no!
So any opinions on this gun ? Or and reccomondations based on my circumstances ?

I would have to say it comes down to whether you like Glock's or not. Some people love them and the polymer and others can't stand them. Some people can't get over the square, blocky look of the slide. I like them and have a few of myself both .45's...heck I even carry one on duty. It's one of the most durable, accurate and reliable pistols you can buy...which is why they sell so many. I would say have your Mom try shooting one at a range where you can rent then and see how she likes it...she may not. The model 17 carries a good capacity of 17+1 rounds I believe. I have seen many, many model 17's on duty belts...must be a reason why. Good luck.

i deffinately recommend going to a range and having your mom test out a few to find what works well for her..i was looking at glocks when i bought my pistol but i was very inaccurate with it since it did not fit my hand well..thats why i bought a springfield xd-40..

the best advice is go and try some out

She owend one before and loved it and still loves them but you are right i think we might want to rent one and let her see how she still likes it, i have one them before at the range and loved it i used the glock 19 though the 17 is a little larger but my father said the larger one would have a little less recoil therefore be easyer to handel, i definetly think glock is a winner i was just poking around for some opions and ideas.

well maybe have her try a larger caliber too...for instance i have shot both xd 40s and xd 45s alot and the 45 has less recoil than my 40 both are the same size..the reason is the muzzel velocity...

Glocks are a love it or hate it weapon. I can't stand the way they feel in my hand.

I love them, but have you considered a revolver instead?

We looked at revolvers and she didnt like how they only took 5 & 6 rounds and she wants a semi- auto, but that is a good idea just to let her try diffrent calibers i think we will spend some time at the range this weekend, she is very picky about the ranges too she only likes gander mtn. but you cant rent there and you have to use there store bought ammo , mabey my father can convince her to go to shoot straight. How about the Smith and Wesson M&P modles i think those were what the police officers get issued am i right ?

well honestly it isnt about how many rounds you have in the gun..its about how well you place the shot that matters

I hate the feel of a Glock in my hand and the trigger leaves much to be desired.........But, that is my insignificant opinion.
Many people do VERY well with the Glock, and it is a very high quality weapon, form your own opinion at the range. Also consider the Beretta 92FS and SIG offerings in 9mm, you cannot go wrong with any of these choices.

I agree with that 100%, but with more rounds you have more chances and with a semi auto you can get those round's out a lot quicker.
I really like revolvers (never shot one), but i would rather have a semi- auto pistol given it being my one and only gun for self defense not saying we are going to stop at one gun but for now id think that a semi-auto would be the best choice for our situation right now,

with a semi auto you also have to consider jams and such or misfires and you have to be able to think and react quickly in order to reload or clear the jam..best thing to do is practice alot!!!

I always recommend a revolver to a novice shooter, much less to learn about the weapon and more time to concentrate on honing shooting skills.

And, NO ONE has ever been under gunned with a 6" barrel .357 mag revolver.

I have had to carry the Glock, didn't like it.
If you are going to use it for protection go with the S/W 40 cal. I have seen alot of thugs that have been shot with a 9mm and are still around.
For someone just starting out, a revolver is the best. With a auto, dust will make it jam. You have to keep it clean like your life depends on it - and it does.
At one city they made everybody carry the same gun, Glock. It is a good idea if you get in a fire fight, you can use the same ammo. One guy was showing a friend his gun, it went off in the hospital. Another one had it go off in his car - the seat belt.
You ask - I had to be honest - Sorry. Me >>>>
