To plow or not to plow...?
I am curious as to what you all think about plowing with a F150.
I have a 89 XL 4x4 in beutiful shape w/ a 302 the truck is pretty much stock other than helpers in the rear and 31x1050x15 BFG A/T's on Outlaw II's. I will be lifting the truck after the years end at most 4". My question is how do these trucks hold up to occaisonal plowing, I know plowing beats on every truck but do f150's take a worse beating?

well, a lot of people are going to tell you otherwise, but as far as I can tell, there is no reason why you can't plow some driveways and parking lots with a half ton. my 94 (see below) plows great and my uncle plowed an f150 for 10 years with no problems. I would recommend heavy duty front springs as they make a huge difference in how the truck handles over the road with a plow on the front. As far as a lift, I'm not sure how well that will work (assuming you are going for a suspension lift)with a plow.

Here's a good website to go to...

I plowed with a 7.5 Western on an '83 Bronco for a couple years before I bought my '89 F250...I never had any problems with it. I did have to put some heavy springs in the front though...wasn't much clearance when I first installed the plow frame...
Good luck!

I just put a 7.5 light duty plow made by Blizzard Mfg. on my 1992 F-150. Had to put Air-Lift air bags in the coils-couldn't run down the road with the plow angled. The Blizzard is probably the lightest 7.5 plow out there - and its all metal. You don't really save a whole lot of weight with the lexan and poly plows because they have to put more steel reinforcement in them.
I have heard from others that the auto lock hubs should be replaced with lockouts when plowing as the hubs will rachet themselves to death. Also use a high CCA battery and make sure your charging system is in good shape. If you do get heavier front springs make sure to half the camber/caster and toe-in checked. These two things sometimes change with heavier springs. I myself like the air bags as you can lower the air pressure in the summer and still get a softer ride. Other than that I can't see any problem plowing with a half ton.

As long as you don't go crazy it will be ok. The more you work it the tougher it is on the truck. I would say it's ok for driveways and small parking lots but if your going to do a lot of plowing you'd be better off with a bigger truck.
