progress on my 50 m-68

i wanted to close up the wheel opening on the merc.it was a 1 ton,but i changed the front hub to 5 lug from a 53 1/2 ton ford.with the 15 inch wheels i thing there is to much space to the fender edge,so this is what i am trying to do.
any feed back as to what you think would be great.

this is what i started with.

i made a cardboard template and traced it on to some tin,cut it out and did some trimming to fit it pretty close and bent some 1/4 inch round steel to shape and tacked to to the tin.

next i took my little hammer and worked it all around the 1/4 inch rod.

so this is tacked in for now.i wanted to see what you all think of it before i weld anymore.

its not to late to stop,if i go on i will do the front in the same way.

thanks guys.
hey wayne, does the 52 merc have the molding on the fender above the wheel well like the 50 does, and do you need any?
i will be driving to California next weekend and could drop them off to you,if you need them you can have them.they are alittle beat up but i think they are easily fixed.

Looks good, but is the "filler" the same size as the regular F1 fender? It looks a bit larger to me. You might have issues later if you install 16" wheels and/or taller tires.

Where in CA are you traveling to? I'm in the Bay Area and welcome any FTE visitors.

YEEEEEEEEEES I wanted to see this done.
i was thinking of doing thata to the rear part of the rear fenders to make it look lower,I think that it would look better if both ends of the rear fender were the same

i think it is smaller than the f1,but im not sure,i just not like to much space around the wheel so i just cut my template back until i liked the opening,i dont think i would ever put bigger on the front,i kind of go more for the big and little with a small rake look.

panelman,im heading to Fortuna to pick up my 8 yr old daughter.she is going to come stay with me for a year to start, maybe longer.
i would have like to meet some of the folks on here,im going to try to get down to Sacramento vintage ford for some parts if i have the cash, but i dont know yet.

Thanks for the offer, but the 52 doesn't have any of the same unique trim as the earlier Mercury trucks. All of the special Mercury character was eliminated in '51, and the differences became strictly badging. But if your travels happen to take you through my town, drop me a PM and feel free to stop and say hi.

so,today i got the front part made up.

made up the template to where it fit pretty good, traced on to the tin and shaped the 1/4 inch round stock, folded the edge around it and tacked it on.here is what i ended up with.im pretty happy with it for my first time at this kind of thing.

sorry the last pic is kind of fuzzy,i went to far out the door and the sun was to bright
this front part was harder to do that the back half, there is a lot of curves going on here.now i need to do the other side before i finish the tacking on this side.....just in case. : )

p.s. sorry for the big pics,i dont know how to make them smaller.

the other side

when i got home from work i went out and started on the passengers side wheel well.
i had the template from the drivers side so i just traced it and cut it out,ok this was not a good idea, who ever said on here that these trucks where not all built the same was right on the money.
the to side are so different i was amazed.so i made a new template and started over.sorry i didnt get pics yet,i will get some tomorrow when i get it shaped, fitted and tacked on.i hope it goes as well as the other side did.

thanks for looking.
