Cool Now the damn thing is surging?!?! Tips, please...

Well it looks like I am being dealt another problem, which stinks because I just went through the whole oil cooler issue last month and spent a ton on Bulletproofing. You guys have been a great help so I wanted to run this by you.

For the past few days, I have noticed that the truck will "surge", for lack of a better term, at idle. Until this morning, it had only done it after the truck was driven for a few miles and warmed up. When at a stop, the idle will fluctuate to the point that you can see the tach needle move up and down and OCCASIONALLY it will do one hard surge that will raise RPMS by about 500 or more. When these very occasional big surges happen they are to the point that if your foot was off the brake and the truck was in Drive it would definitely lunge forward for a second.

For the most part, the surging/missing is just enough to notice at idle but these occasional big jumps in RPM are worrying me. As of this morning there are no codes coming up in my Edge Insight CTS so I don't have anything to go off of there. I did a little searching here under 'surging' and one thing that keeps coming up is the ICP sensor.
Truck is a 2004 with an '03 motor with 90,000 miles- well maintained but probably just about due for fuel filters and that's about it. Any ideas??? I'm hoping that I can get some info here that will lead me to a solution to this new problem which is aggravating the hell out of me.

Thanks guys!

I would put my money on the ICP sensor and or pigtail.

Are you leaking oil off the back of the motor (it will look like rear main seal is leaking)

Its worst when cold.

My truck eats them like candy.....crap location and design could be a bit better...oh well

later 6.0L's have the revised location on the pass. side valve cover.

hope this helps.

Agreed. 03 motors are hell on ICP sensors. Be sure you change the connector if it's oil soaked.

So you guys are feeling pretty certain my symptoms are pointing to the ICP then? From my reading I know I have the worst case on ICP location- how hard is it to do? I assume the pigtail connector is a cut-and-solder job?

There's a good thread in the tech folder on how to do it. I doubt the pigtail is cut and solder. Probably butt splice with heat shrink. At least that's the way the two different motorcraft connectors I've bought are packaged.

03 ICP - 04 (pre 9/23/03) 3C3Z-9F838-EA or 1845274C92
ICP pigtail 5C3Z-12224-A or 1850712C91

Well it depends... do a search on how to do it. there are two schools of thought.

1. go thru the bottom...
thats fine and dandy if you have skiny long arms.

2. thru the top.
takes longer but your elbow and wrist and head will thank you.

just a simple splice job on the pigtail.

2-3hrs is about what it takes for some people.

The one in tech folder though the top is the way to go you can't see it but its not that bad been there done it and looks like going to do it again, having a little surging to.

Thanks for the input, guys. I just wish I could get some reassurance that this is the issue. Since I am "in the business" I checked with the Ford dealer around the corner and they said they would install it for 2.5 hours @ $75/hour. Just need to decide if it's worth the money not to screw with this during my weekend.

The money you'd spend on labor would finance most your weekend fun.

the way I found out on the guys truck the other day was by unpluging the icp and the truck started running better. With yours being an 03 I don't know that is an option.
