Cowboys and Sooners Report for Duty
All you Oklahomans please identify yourselves here. I think it would be fun to get everyone together in one thread so that we can share local information about junk yards, or craigslist postings that we spot for trucks or parts. Also, this thread can serve as a local place for us Sooners...uhuumm..or Cowboys....to swap parts between ourselves or organize meets for our 1980-86 Bullnose pick-ups. It will be interesting to see how many Cowboys...uhuumm...or Sooners are active on the site.

If this is supposed to be what I grew up with then maybe I'm in the wrong forum 'cause I'd been married 13 years and had 2 kids when my truck was made. And, as I found out to my chagrin, this truck had a COMPUTER! But, due to the PO's mod's I had to change that, so it is now almost "old school" - the only diff being it doesn't have points.
Maybe I do need to get started on that '69 Super Bee since it's lots closer to what I grew up with. I was 21 when I bought the first Bee and, looking back on it, I certainly hadn't quit growing up at that point. In fact, I'm not sure I've quit yet.

See, you just proved my theory. The computer system failed, and the good old tried and true "old school" stuff revived it. I bet it even runs better than it ever did before, even the day it rolled off the assembly line.
Dad's truck is one of the last to roll off the line with points, and it still runs. Radius arm bushings, rear wheel cylinders, a seal in the steering gear, and some belts, I bet it will still outrun most anything rolling off the assembly line with an 8 foot bed bolted to the back today. They just don't build 'em like they used to.

RW - I'm guessing the computerized system did fail, but not sure. What I do know is that the PO had the feedback carb replaced w/such a simple carb that it doesn't even have the idle speed solenoid for A/C. That left 7 connectors hanging in the breeze and a confused computer. I'm sure it was in limp-home mode and that's the way it ran - very poorly.
Having said that, the head with cracks in 2 places didn't help. Nor did the several bad intake and exhaust valves. And, the cam that was flat on two lobes didn't help power - though it did help gas mileage since I was running a 6.3 cylinder engine. (Red neck 8-6-4?)
But, as you know, 2 new-to-me heads with all new valves, a new cam, a new timing chain set, and a DS-II retrofit made worlds of difference. Yes, I'm convinced it runs better than new. And, I can work on it! Simple, like me.
