88 f350 overheating

I have an 88 F-350 that is over heating. I've replaced radiator, cap, tstat and overflow tank. Heat works fine, so I don't think its the water pump but could be wrong. plz help time to go camping.

Check and make sure the water pump shaft isn't loose. (that wouldn't make it over heat, but it's a good thing to check before a long trip!)

Since you changed everything, only thing left is a fan clutch. Is it locking in? Can you hear it? You should clearly hear it when it locks in!

How do you know it's overheating?

Are you going by the crappy dash gauge?

What kind of thermostat did you use? Use FORD or International T-stats ONLY.

I put a real temp gauge under the dash. If the clutch fan makes a sound when it engages then I don't think its ever worked. Last night comeing home from a game it heated up to 250 so I opened the windows and turned the heat on.

my 88 has never made any sound from the fan clutch either. as stated, what t-stat did you use? parts store t-stats don't work in our trucks for some reason, you need to use a t-stat from either ford or an international dealer.

For anyone wanting to know, this is what a fully functional fan clutch should sound like on one of these trucks!

When you start the engine cold and drive for a 'lil while, it will be locked, and will unlock as you drive.

It sounds like an air plane! ......or a bad front wheel bearing on a late 90's GM car

That sucks! Especially since in your part there should be alot more of these older trucks still alive and kicking?

We have 2 IH dealers here, the one I always go to, have everything for our IDI's, infact, alot of stuff is in stock!

My fan clutch doesnt make a lick of noise at all, would that explain the overheating problem i have when driving @ 65-70 mph after 50 miles? it overheats, then if i slow down you can visibly watch the gauge go back down. It does it sometimes, but on the last 40 mile stretch from billings to missoula, from Drummond to missoula, it stops overheating....wtf lol.

the only time my 88 would overheat was when the original radiator plugged up around 250,000 miles.

Aune 163rd that was the same problem I was having. I replaced the fan clutch yesterday, today I hauled a tractor across the county and back, pulled a tedder and a diskbine and it only got above 210 once. What rpms are you turning at 65?
