97 f150 steering column crossover?

I have a 97 f150 xlt with a manual transmission. I need to get a new steering column however all of the junkyards say that an automatic transmission steering column will not crossover for a manual. Is this true? can the old steering column from the manual transmission and the one from an automatic be used together? Please any help or suggestions with anyone who may have done or knows about this would be greatly appreciated. I don't really feel like spending a lot on new if the used will work.

thats what I had thought and the parts people have seemed to say that their books say they are not interchangable so I was curious as to why they think that might be. Good to know that this will be all I have to do. I was somewhat concerned that perhaps the wiring or something else may be an issue. Thanks.
