#30 Fuse Blows at Key On

My #30 fuse in the interior panel blows as soon as you turn the key on. I was pulling the gooseneck and went to pull out of a driveway and the truck died. The chip wouldn't power up and this led me to believe it was a PCM fuse. I then went digging and found the #30 fuse blown. I then unplugged the wastegate solenoid and fuel bowl heater. Still blew.
Then I uninstalled the chip and unplugged the brake controller and the fuse still blew.
I'm pretty much out of options. I had to call a friend and he hauled my load home and then we loaded up the truck and hauled it to the Ford dealer.
Any thoughts on what to look into? I a certainly not above trouble shooting and fixing it right there in the dealers lot.

unplug the fuel bowl heater...its in the back of the fuel bowl and i think its yellow...replace the fuse and see if i works...very common for the fuel bowl heater to short and blow the fuse. you really dont need the heater anyway...just use electrical tape and cover the plug. you should be good to go

Chris,
He said he has already unplugged the Fuel bowl heater, I'm go to say change out the PCM Relay with the Blower Motor Relay and see what happens. The only other thing is the IDM relay directly on that circuit.

Scott,
Also check the 42 pin connector in top of the driver side VC for wire chaffing where the wire rubs against the VC.

Another important thing to note, sometimes the truck would stumble when you bumped the dash just right. I don't know if this was related, but that is what made me unhook the brake controller. It would happen pretty much only in park. It happened a lot when the dog jumped in and out the drivers side.

I checked the crap out of the underdash area for bare/chaffed wires. There was a cluster of about five cut off wires towards the right, but they appeared to be factory??? They were all tied together and the same exact length. The PO did some not quite right electrical things so they may have been a hack job when installing the brake controller? The brake controller currently has about 2' of wires that go to a grey(?) plug that plugs into the harness on the far right, high side of the dash. That all looks pretty legit.

I take it I will see the PCM relay when I read the book diagram? I hate to be that guy, but the book is in Elkhorn with the truck.

I live off Hwy A between Richmond and Johnstown. The truck is at Elkhorn Motors because I was on the fire department for 7 years and got to know Scott Last and all his other relatives on the FD. I'm not sure if there is a better diesel dealer/service department in the area, but that is where I took it.

Did you ever put the unit bearings in the front end? I have to do that project too and don't want to pay Pete's to do it. Maybe you could help guide me through it.

I usually take my front end stuff to precise alignment in big bend. They're real good and reasonable. I've done ball joints on my obs and im sure these trucks aren't much different. There's write ups on it and id be glad to give you a hand if you'd like

I had that fuse, I think, blow last summer. It was a wire grounded against the driverside front shock mount, I think after the local dealer did a recall on my cruise control near the brake master cylinder. Maybe worth a look, good luck.

I found the problem, but have not repaired it yet. I didn't really look at how I could/would fix it. I was just super happy that I found it. It was a bare wire on the 42 pin connector on the drivers side VC. I came up with a Presidential solution to the problem while it was at the dealer so they could do their stupid recall stuff. I figured as long as it was there and the chip was pulled I might as well stop resisting the recall. I shoved the cardboard that the fuses came on between the VC and the wires so they wouldn't ground out. "Fixed" for now!

It happened a lot when the dog jumped in and out the drivers side.
Shame on you for trying to blame the dog!!!
