Ford 351m/400 and 429.460 bell housing depth

I have been told that the depth of the bell housings on the 351m/400 is different then the 429/460. 351m/400 housings are easier to come by and i was wondering if one would bolt up to a 460, i know the pattern is the same but is the depth the same?(4 speed manual transmission.)

I'm getting ready to do just that, use a 400 bellhousing on a 460. On my first attempt I found there is a depth difference, took it all back apart, and left it for a couple of years due to other projects. Since I have found that you can use spacers and make it work but I do not have any measurments made or materials selected. I need to mate them back up and see how much space there is first. I'm open to ideas and suggestions if anyone already has this info...

You should use a scattershield. That 500 horse motor, think you'll ever tear up or blow up a clutch? How fast does it rev, over 5500?

That potmetal 400 bell is just going to end up imbeded in your legs if something goes wrong.

Just a thought....

Still think a C6 is the better way to go....

I dont think I will find my self getting over 4500 rpm. The engine is only going to be in there for about another 9 months, then it getting a cummins swap. The c6 is shot in it will be well over $800 to get a good performance transmission built. And i can do a manual swap ford $400-$450, I just want to be able to drive it around a little longer.

I looked quite a bit for info on spacing the bell housings..have not found any. If you figure it out tell me...if I find anymore info I will tell you.

Bolt your flywheel up get everything ready. Use clutch alignment tool bolt up pursue plate. Slide trans in till it bottoms out. Space left between block and bell housing added to a small amount is your measurement.

The small amount. I would slide the trans into the bushing in the flywheel and see if it bottoms out before doing the clutch. I haven't checked the books but would bet it only goes in so far.

I guess thats about the only way to do it...probably the hard way, But if I cant find a 460 bell then that would be the way to go. Sliding the transmission in all the way, I would imagine back it out a 1/16 or 1/8 of an inch so the surface or tip of the shaft wouldn't ride on anything...then add that to the thickness of the spacer plate.

Well, when we get to that point we will figure it out...I will go to my local salvage yard sometime this month and see if I can find a 460 bell from a truck or van, its not like a bell housing is a hot ticket item, when ever i go there the last usable parts in the truck that has been there a long time is the trans and bell.
