Smoke on hard acceleration

I have noticed a whitish smoke on starts and hard accelerations. Coolant level is fine. What is this from? 92 7.3 idi non turbo. It only seems to come out at 2-3k rpm. Here is a video showing the smoke.

(Click pic, links to photobucket for video)

Normal or is there something wrong?

Smile White Smoke

Hello,

Most white smoke comes from timing or air intrusion. Those are the main two reasons, but the other reasons are usually associated or leads back to them. Could be ip pump is in beginning stages of crapping out...same for air intrusion. When you first start up there may be some small volume of air in the system from bleeding down overnight...in other words a very small leak, and when you hard accelerate it sucks more air through that small leak.

Might just run some diesel clean when you fill up next time and check for loose fuel filters etc....and go for awhile and see if it gets worse.

Good Luck

If it was air intrusion wouldn't that cause a hard start since there is air in the fuel? Mine starts right up.

Smile Not Necessarily

My truck fires right up first time everytime and I get a few seconds to a half minute of white smoke when shes cold. After that no smoke except when I am towing or standing on the fuel peddle, but then it's black.

Like I said, you may just be in the beginnings of worse symptoms to come. Old fuel line...the soft part...can sometimes give and take away leaks just depending on the weather and strain put om em'..

Last time my truck smoked white when hard throttling...it would only do it arounf 1800 rpm...found out my pump was a hair out of time.

My understanding is that the timing adjustment is at the pump? The place with the allen head? If my problem was timing do I need to advance it or retard it? Also how much each way?

No it won't hurt...as a matter of fact I would leave it alone and really not worry too much. These things can take a lot. I would just wait and see if it gets worse over time, and if it does then do something...could be u just got some old or inferior desiel fuel too. The cetane rating off desiel fuel is all over the place.

119,000 on the truck. I dont know much of past history of the injectors. I can see by the color of them to know if they are the factory ones right?

Here are pics of the injectors.

So your saying it could be old injectors? how about the IP? That sounds expensive and hard to replace compared to injectors.

Any way to test whats bad?

probly got some injectors that are getting weak. if it smoke at 2-3K rpm then it is not gonna be an air leak, if it was then it would probly be so bad that it would be poring fuel on the ground. find a diesel shop that KNOWS what they are doing and get the injectors pope tested. that will tell you if you have any that are leaking or popping at a low pressure.

you mileage says your due for injectors. if the injectors are painted the same grey color as the engine they are original. you will want to do injectors and IP at the same time. new injectors will finish off a weak IP.
