5.0 to 5.8 upgrade

After reading several forums about squeezing more hp/torque from my '95 F150's 302 I dropped that idea and purchased a complete '94 351 from a Bronco with 100k on it. The 351 is now bolted to an engine stand until I decide what cost effective modifications I can do to increase hp/torque. I want to stay with the fuel injection, add headers, high flow dual exhaust without cats and an air intake system. I'm sure this will be just the start of several questions.

1. Is the stock '94 351 roller cam/rockers?

2. I'm planning on boring it 15 over and regrinding heads, would a cam upgrade increase hp/torque without screwing up the FI?

3. Both the 302 & 351 are speed density. Do I need a computer upgrade to get the benefits of any of these mods?

4. Is gasket porting of heads difficult?

Thanks for any help or recommendations you can give me!!

I may be mistaken, I just went to the garage to check the 302 and it appears it maybe mass air instead of speed density. There is an electrical component on the air intake next to the stock air filter box that states the AIR FLOW direction and has a prt number of F5UF12B579AA.

If I have mass air will this work on the 351? and will the mass air sensor detect additional air volume when I add a K&N type filter and increase hp?

You happen to be very lucky. Your 94 engine is in fact roller cam campatable. It is drilled to accept the cam. You are on the right track, you will be able to use your existing Mass air setup with the 5.8 wihtout much trouble and will compensate for any future mods you plan to do without adding 500 dollar chips, etc. I am not sure if your 5.0 injector harness is big enough to stretch around the 5.8 intake. It SHOULD be long enough, but ive never heard anyone talk about it. If not, you with have to find one that is set up for sequential injection because the harness on the 94 will be batch fire. And as long as you are tearing into the engine, definately replace that cam with something a bit bigger to take full advantage of the headers and exhaust and intake. For you, this should be a basic bolt in swap since you don't have to mess with computer.

If you are looking for cost effective, I'd avoid the whole roller cam scenario. Even though the block is drilled for it, you could wrap up a big chunk of change in acquiring all the necessary parts. Roller cams are better at producing high RPM horsepower than low end torque that you really need in a truck anyway. Take a look at Comp cams part number 31-255-5. It's a computer friendly high torque grind. Several guys here are running it and are extremely pleased. I've got one slated for my 351W. Be aware that part# is for a 302 firing order. The same cam is available in a 351W firing order, but I'd use the 302 version to keep the firing order the same as your original 302. This way you can keep all the benefits of the sequential injection without rearranging all the injector plugs and wiring. Just make sure you rewire the plug wires to match the 302 firing order if you use a 302 cam. It would run OK with mismatched injector/ignition firing order, but the idle wouldn't be as smooth and you'd lose the cylinder balance test ability of the computer.

I am almost positive the 302 engines in trucks that came with mass air were in fact the HO firing order (same as 351). So, you would in want to get the cam for the 351 so it would work. You may want to go and take a peek inside your engine bay just to make sure, ford has been known to not have everything the same on their engines from one to another.

Good idea on the cam, I have also seen it listed and am highly considering it or a custom grind for my 351. If you look in the new summit catalog I believe that crane has even come out with a new line of cams, it is in the truck section. I can't remember if they were special for computer controled (what you would want) or just high torque cams.

Thanks for the help! I'll check the firing order on my 302 tonight. I did get the wiring harness and computer with the 351. But I'll probably have to use my 302 wiring harness that has the mass air connection.
