1994 Solid Axle Swap (Dana 44)

Im thinking about using a Dana 44 solid axle instead of a 60 because its cheaper and you can build a 44 to be just as strong if not stronger than a Dana 60 but i gotta question.

will the 44 out of a 78 or 79 F150 bolt right up to a 94 F150 or will i have to go through the whole process of making brackets and stuff? (Im going to use a coil spring set up).

Hilljackusmc you dont need lift springs to put a dana 60 or 44 on if you put a dana 60 on a f 250 it makes it into a f 350 really but thats with a f 250 maybe with a 150 you do but with an f 250 stock springs are ok.my truck has only a 3" body lift on it but has a dana 60 straight axle swap.i had to get bigger rear blocks that were on an angle and cut my front drive shaft and have it spin balanced.the dana 60 raised my f 250 up 2 inches.so 3 inch body lift 2 inch with the dana 60 and toehr inch with add a leafs.those lift springs are weak i have them out in my barn but i use my truck for work and use the stock leaf springs much stronger.just to let you know once you put a dana 60 on your truck it wont ride the same it will be alot heaver and not ride as nice down the street and wont stop as fast.

Im not putting a Dana 60 under my truck.
Im building a Dana 44 to be equal with a Dana 60.

Yukon Chromemoly axle shafts or...Moser Max Axle Shafts?

and does anybody know where i can get "heavy duty" steering knuckles for a Dana 44? cause there is a guy on fullsizebronco and he kept breaking steering knuckles.

if your going dana 44 with coils you need at least a 4'' lift spring or else you will run into clearance issues.

moser shafts
company called reid racing makes flattop knuckles for the d44, but they are pricey. most only go through knuckles if they are running too big a tire for the axle or wheeling the hell outa it which is why if thats the case they go with a d60..there have even been a few that have done a coil spung d60 with great success.

i will be doing a SAS on my truck at the end of the summer, as im almost done gathering parts for it...ive found fullsizebronco.com an infinite wealth of knowledge on the subject, as they have a subsection purely devoted to SAS's

well i have a 3inch body lift with a 6inch suspension lift. and im gonna be running 38.5 to maybe 40 inch tires. its gonna be a "daily driver" and going mudding on the weekends. so thats why im getting moser or alloy USA hardened axle shafts. i know they will hold up but my main concern is the knuckles breaking everytime i go through a hole so i need something that will hold up.

I would just try a D60. By the time you're done with this, you could have bought one.

yea for 500 to 1000 bucks.
i bought my 44 for 250 and after i added everything up between parts and stuff its around 900 bucks but if i had bought a 60 i would have rebuilt it and stuff because im not putting a stock 19 year old axle under my truck so i would have been around 1000 to 2000 bucks.

so in other words i got a cheaper very stout front axle for the fraction of the cost.

Doubtful, but as long as you're happy, that's what matters!

you can build a d44 as strong if not stronger than a d60. no questions about that.. by the time you build that d44 stronger or as strong as the d60 though it will outcost the cost of rebuilding the stock d60, with stock parts....d44 with aftermarket stronger parts=d60....d60 rebuilt= just as strong, and at the end of the day honestly a better investment when it comes to axles....especially as big of tires as you plan on running...the d44 is only recc. to like 35's or 36's.....save yourself the time and trouble, and do it rite the first time to avoid the headache...

theres no way you will convince me( or most people) that d44 can be built stronger then a 60 for reasonable cost. You will come out cheaper in the end just buying a 60. Even after you do your axleshafts and knuckles and what not, the spider gears in them might as well be plastic. I broke them with 33s and 35s.
Also broke a ring and pinion on 35s. All this with stock motor.
