Ya, I know. I'm gonna try to get some peterbuilt horns used. I'm just looking at that system to use w/ them. I never really realized the benefits of having onboard air. Fill your own tires up, airbags, horns, nail guns, etc.

 

If you get horns from a Pete you will need a valve. You may find horns for sale with the valve on them already, it is integrated. And it it quits working, it isnt integrated into your horns.

 

Thanks, I thought you said to go 3/8 to the horns though? Is 1/4 suitable?

 

Yeah, I was thinking 1/4" was too small but I was wrong... 1/4'' is whats on my truck (I couldnt look because its in a different city due to high fuel prices im driving a car). But the 1/4 will work fine. As the others said, bigger line means more volume which means more sound but big rigs only use 1/4 going to their horns.

Last thing ill leave you with... Be forewarned about hornblasters air line. It IS NOT the same stuff I was talking about. When I ordered my stuff (compressor, valve, pressure switch) I decided "Hey, ill get the line from them cause im getting everything else from them" but that was a bad idea.

I use the compression fittings the trucks use as well and when I used their line everything leaked. They have the newer push in design that may be better but I dont know for sure. Their line is a bit cheaper than what I expected. Try it cause youre getting it with the kit anyhow. Just a heads up.

It sounds negative but I really do like hornblasters. If I could change some things with them I definitely would but they are good people and have a pretty good, reliable company.

 

i had a big air horn that i pulled off our freightliner and put it behind my grill and ran it to a direct drive air compressor, and it was pretty loud.

 

One last question, what horns sound better(deeper)? The rectangular opening with the plate in front or the round open opening? The only ones I see around here are the rectangular ones, do they sound the best?

If its off an old firetruck, that should be a Grover "Stuttertone". If it is, you would be very pleased with it, not only are they loud, but they have a very distinctive tone.

Actually that one is not too badly priced, as I do not think it is a Grover, but is a knock-off brand. If you look at the bottom of it, it has the solenoid on it already. A true horn from a semi would not have that. The key for the tones on a semi horn is in the diaphragm and the size/length of the trumpet. A bigger diaphragm with a longer/bigger trumpet opening will have a lower tone, at the same time it will also need more air to get the same sound levels (not tone) as one with a smaller/shorter trumpet.

 

So you are saying the one I posted would sound similar to a big rig or higher toned? I emailed the guy and he said its a reproduction horn and he got a bunch at a auction. He said they were made a year ago and were never really on a truck but that they sounded good and worked well. Stay away???

 

At the price he has listed, its not a bad deal.
