Looking at possibly buying a 94 to96 f150, have questions

I am looking at buying a 94 to 96 f150 excab 4x4 and was wondering what I should look out for when I am looking/test driving a truck. Would this year range have an AOD transmission? Most of the trucks in my area have the 351 in them. What should I expect for fuel mileage out of one? I know gearing and tire size will make a difference but woud you be able to pull 12-13 around town?

351s have the E4OD. Mileage will vary 10 & up in town to15 at best on highway. Mpg depending on wear, state of tune, tires, gearing & driving habits. Look for rust in wheel arches, cab corners & suspension depending on where you are.

Try & stick to 95s & up. 96 F-150s will be OBDII, 250s will be OBDI. Only 302/5.0 will have Mass Air if that matters, in 94 & 95.

The best bet to familarize yourself is reading about 20+ pages of old posts in this forum & using the search function. The same problems are repeatedly asked about almost daily. You can also use google and put "+FTE" or "+ford-trucks.com" at the end of your search query.

Hope that helps some.

Ok thanks, I just went and looked at one tonight, it was a 94 with a 4" lift and 33's on it and the 351. Drove pretty good, needed a few things. Here's a link to the classifieds ad: Car Classifieds for Utah, Idaho, and Wyoming - ksl.com

I know with the lift and 33's it will only pull around 10 but it won't be driven tons so thats not a deal breaker. Why do you say stick with a 95 or newer?

As David said, these will have the E4OD trans. The 95 models updated some weak parts and problems the earlier versions had so you want to stay with the newer models. Nice looking truck but the rebuilt title would worry me.

alrighty, gonna have my mechanic look at it tomorrow. Yeah I am a little leary about a rebuilt title. If Icould get it for $2500 I think it would be a pretty good deal.

i had a 95 xcab 4x4 with a 5.8. i think i was lucky to get 10mpg, but it ran like a bat outta heck. probably gonna have a e4od in it. check under for rust, spring shackles, radius arm brackets, brake lines, cab floors and radiator support

I have a rebuilt title on my truck. When the insurance compant "totaled" it, it was due to the fact that it would cost more to repair it at a body shop than what the "blue book" said it was worth. The damage? Front bumper, grille, hood, valance panel, headlights, & header panel. No damage to the frame or radiator support. I kept the truck, and the insurance company gave me a check for the value of the truck. I repaired the truck myself (just bolted on the above mentioned parts). Most expensive part of the repair was the paint. In a nutshell, a salvage title could mean something major or minor happened to the truck. A VERY close inspection would be warranted.

I will check it over good when I take it to my mechanic. I asked him how firm he was on the price and he said he's pretty flexible on it. He just priced it at $3600 to see what he would get offered. He knows rebuilt titles aren't very popular. He's owned it for 8 years and is just looking for a newer truck so hopefully there isn't anything going wrong with it and he's just trying to dump it.

The main thing that concerns me is the 185,000 miles on the truck. That seems like alot but if I can get it for the right price I could deal with it as long as it has been maintained. There are a few other things wrong with the truck, it needs new rotors (slight pulse felt through petal while braking) and a few trim pieces in the interior could use replacing but nothing a day at the junk yard couldn't fix.

Is the E4OD tranny really that bad?

Sounds good, just about like anything else it all comes down to how well it was maintained. The other thing is the truck has bucket seats in it right now and I would want to swap those out for a 60/40 or 40/20/40 split seats. Would those be a direct bolt in and which years would I be looking for at a junk yard?

Also will a back seat from a 97-99 f150 fit in the excab of a 94-96? just wondering causethe newer ones are alittle wider so it will fit a car seat better.
