I don't think I would want the added 60 lbs of weight plus the cost of filling a 36 gallon tank all at once.

I can get 515 miles out of 26 gallon tank fuel capacity like it is.

 

My old 5.4 sure doesn't get mileage running 85. Between Montgomery, Al. and Mobile, I didn't have to come off my 85 mph cruise control for nearly 2 hours, and was running with the (nearly non-existant) traffic flow. I'm sure the new 5.0 and ecoboost will do a lot better at those speeds. Still, it's punching a pretty big hole in the air.

 

Other than because they want to, I don't understand why folks seem to always be in such a hurry.

I drive from home to Houston Texas 359 miles between 5-1/2 to 6 hours at 60 and 65 mph.

 

For short trips, I don't push the speed much at all. For a 750+ mile trip, I push hard and knock nearly 2 hrs. off a long day. Might pay me $20-$30/hr. to slow down!!

 

The same distance at 75 mph is done in 4-3/4 hrs. Some folks would prefer to spend the extra hour doing what they intended to do at trip's end, only much earlier. THAT'S why they want to.
I don't consider driving a waste of time, in fact I enjoy it, but I also want to use that time as efficiently as possible, meaning driving a bit faster if it allows more time doing other activities. It's all in how you value your time.

 

The extra capacity allows one to be a bit more selective about where he chooses to fill up, and to go a bit farther between fills. If you had the 36 gal tank, you would be able to go about 700 miles at the mileage you quoted for your tank. That way your stops are dictated more on how long your bladder holds out...

 

My bladder never holds out for 600 miles, so I have to stop any way. I stop every 3-4 hrs to pee and stretch, which gets me to just below 3/4 tank. Top off and do another 3! Now if I was towing then the extra fuel would be nice, other wise I would just be carrying extra weight and getting worse mileage!

 

Cobra - Do you remember how much you paid for a 36 gallon tank?

 

Paid about $200, complete from a junkyard.

 

I love the 36 gallon tank. I don't like getting gas, so this tank reduces the number of times I have to. It doesn't make a difference if I pay two times $60 or once $120, right? Except saving me some time ....
And it sure is awesome when towing our Travel Trailer - getting 11mpg.
BTW, 60 lbs extra won't affect your mileage. That's 1% extra weight, there really is no effect at all on the highway, and nothing measurable in the city.

 

Somewhat earlier someone (maybe me?) assumed (BAD word..) that the 36 gal tank would NOT fit a Reg Cab Shortbed.
Just wondering, has anyone totally ignored the above and tried it anyway? 'Cause if you have, AND succeeded, let us all know, so that I (and many others I'm sure) may benefit from the greatly extended range (about 200mi @ 70mph) and resulting better choices in fueling stops. Let's hear it y'all!

 

Generally when swapping out fuel tanks you need to change the pump along with it. Since you have the whole set up you should have no problems

To clarify, my question is whether anyone has succeeded in putting a 36 gal. tank in a Reg. Cab Short Bed.
But to comment on Wwilson43's post, I understand both the 26 and 36 gal tanks use the same pump, but the level indicator might be different. So yeah, it's easier to change the whole enchilada.
Anyone done the above-mentioned swap? Line forms here.....
