Do you think the cruise is too sensitive? I hate to watch my speed the whole time I'm on the highway. What type of mileage gains are we going to see if you don't use cruise vs. cruise.

Im sorry but

Im sorry but I don't think ford engineered the pickup to surge in 6th gear. I think its a programing issue and if Ford hears enough from the customers it will adress it. I have a 05 6.0 f-250 and it never exhibits this surging. Its enough of a issue that 3/4 of the time I will run it in 5th gear because it doesnt surge and gets better fuel economy because of it. I am hoping some of my fellow 2011 truck owners will maybe have a dealer that has stumbled on to fix.

It's trying to maintain itself going up a hill, boosting (10lbs boost) a tad then sees it's going faster than the cruise you selected, then it unloads the engine (0 boost)... Going up a hill or incline of some sort, with the cruise set the engine will be fluctuating up and down.. This is not a bad thing, or anything wrong. Does this makes since to anybody?

My symptom occures on flat ground. I have a stretch of road that rises about a 1000ft in over 50+ miles. It doesnt have many abrupt hill or valleys, just a contant climb in elevation. The cruise control should be able to find a certain amound of boost to maintain a constant speed. Can also accure if you have about a 20mph headwind on flat roads. It just seems to struggle with a certain amount load or resistance. Put a trailer behind it and the symptom doesnt appear. I am not talking about surging that comes from hills and valleys. That is understandable. This is on very flat roads in the southern high plains. If I lived in another part of the country I probably would not have noticed this issue.

I am not to worried about it. My concern is it is coming up on camping season and I pull a good sized TT and dont want to get stranded on the side of the road somewhere. I love the way this truck pulls. As long as it keeps doing it.

Cheezit, do I understand you correctly that this is normal and we shouldn't be concerned about it? When I get into the busy season I often drive 1000+ km (625 mi) a day, using cruise control is important for me.

To the guys that went to the dealer on this, did any of you get a solution? Or did you get the usual, "everything's normal."

ya pretty much on speed controll its normal. I hate to say that> i wish there was a fix but being 100% pcm controlled its all done by programing and the truck willdo what it want to make itself happy. you will find by not using it you will also net better milage.

OK, thanks for the reply. I think I'll still go to the dealer, if nothing else just to register what the truck is doing so Ford has more feed back on the issue.

My 6.0 did it, and the 6.7 does it, but only under very limited conditions, with the cruise set near the lower limit of operation (50 MPH) and on slight rolling (up/down) grades. Never on flat ground or steady grades or steady pulling. The 6.0 did it far more often and more pronounced than the 6.7 does.

Otherwise, I don't think the cruise hurts the MPG significantly--at least not on my 6.7. I use the cruise control a lot to lessen the tendancy to speed, and I've often registered 20/21 MPG on long trips where the cruise control is used a majoritiy of the time.

For whoever asked about axle ratios, I have the 3.55 axle on my F350.

First whats a ssm ?

My6.0 does it bad. 65 on cruise it drops to about 60 then back again. I dont think it used to do it 140000 on it now.

Thanks
Im no expert but it seems to me that these trucks are just so powerful and computerized searching for max mpg that on cruise the brain just takes over and gives a little motor to manetain speed and then backs off to conserve fuel

my 6.7 will surge a little when it is cleaning the exhaust filter on the highway. It isnt that noticable so i think i can deal with it. It also seems to only be when im going down hill too.
