I'd think an AT would be able to beat a MT for that reason.

It has nothing to do with being a meaningful test, hell for that matter it ain't even a test to begin with, it's just some people's way of settling score and gaining bragging rights. That said I think tug-o-war pulls like that are completely idiotic and the only thing they really accomplish is putting some more wear and tear on the trucks, but to each their own...
