from another thread....
"The girlie 302 is an old joke from a few months ago. I like to drag it out every so often just to stir the pot. Can't let 'fenders have all the fun."
To RMF, 'rage, Carl, John and anyone else who has engaged in the 302 Bash Fest '03 (Add your name here if you're guilty.)
I have been living right and praying daily my 302 will run well enough to provide some good tire smoke PICs for you nay saying turkeys. I bought some good gas mileage gears to replace the current low gear set. They will absolutely not be installed until I have provided said photos.
Day two of only playing in the driveway but it is becoming increasingly evident to me that some of you apparently lack 'fenders engine building skills.
'fenders only be motivated by those who talk smack here! Man, I gotta go out and start my truck again!

Put a 351 rv cam in it and place a better breathing set of heads on it and what a difference it will make. The oldest son had done that to a Mustang he had once and there wasn't too many that came close to what his car was able to do. Will probably do the same program to a Thunderbird out in the back yard so as to get it out of the garden and get it out of town. The young people like to do that type of thing to their cars around here. There isn't anything a 302 can't do with the right program and the right set of gears. Keep up the good work fenders.

350 HP from a 302 is a lofty goal for a street engine. Care to share the plan details?
'rage
It will be carpet smoke if I don't get some exhaust on it soon.
Gear Up
It's already built up. I am pleasantly surprised. These guys have been scaring me for months. I wouldn't be talking trash if it were still a stocker. Stock late 70's 302s are pretty sad.

Hehe, smoke from exhaust....that was the previous engine. The smoke is actually half my tread disappearing within 5 minutes. You should see the tires, and I still have burnt rubber crap on the inside of my rear fenders from that day.....sigh....wish I could do it again
Fenders
I plan on running a roller block 302 with a B303 cam, trickflow twisted wedge heads and intake, and a few other assorted goodies with the SEFI setup. And if I don't reach my 350HP goalwith that.....well there's always that oh so nice vortech supercharger that goes on the EFI setups so easily

Hey!
Where were all you 302 fans when I was being beaten up here for no reason? I am thinking maybe the aftermarket should offer a 351W DE-stroker kit so their engines would REV like a good engine should. What do you think?
BTW 'rage, I did catch that 289-302 = Ford Fairy Series comment.
BTW John, I can place my fist between my headers and my steering gear box.

"Proudly representing FTErs that don't need 460 CID to get 250 HP.

Here in the Ottawa Valley, 302's tend to travel in packs and whenever possible try to get a 351W to hang with them so the 307s,327s and 350s don't pick on 'em. Otherwise, a few SBCs shows up and theose 302s start dumping big puddles of oil on the ground....
Although, generally we try use 302's for powering our truck heaters. The revs seem to help 'em there.
It's so sad really.....
BWAH, HA,HA.......

The only comment that I have to add is that I am not the one who has found myself on the defensive end of a powerplant choice debate. No one has questioned the testosterone level of my 351W. Maybe you guys should invite the TorqueQueen over here from the windsor family forum to help defend the masculinity of your underhood residents. He's never built an engine in his life and still seems to have all the answers.

3 head swaps, 3 cam changes, and 2 engine changes on 2 different trucks, so apparently I'm not qualified to be over here, but I'll try anyway. it isn't terribly complicated to build a very powerful, very stout 302 that will be kind to you everyday in traffic and at the gas station as well. Now I will recognize one aspect of Rage's post, and that's that I have never built a 351W, or even ridden in one that was built at all. I also didn't build the new engine in my truck right now, because there is no way to beat the price of a Ford Motorsport 302 shortblock using quality parts, and a machinist that cares for 10 minutes about your engine. However, I have always done my own work -shortblocks. A 351 has more stroke, larger mains, and larger head bolts, but a 302 can be built to make impressive power as well. In terms of bang for the buck, if you're starting from scratch, a 351 is the most economical way to make more power, but there is nothing sissy about a 302. Oh yeah, by the way, I've got your tire smoke right here, pushing 29" tires through 2.75 gears to do as much burnout as I can afford, and I'm talking about from idle at a redlight in drive, none of this sidestepping the clutch business. I really don't like talking about how much power my 302 makes, because I haven't strapped it to a dyno yet, so don't expect me to post numbers here that are anything less than a theoretical estimation from Dyno 2000, but the title of this thread alone more than justifies a call to arms. a 302 has an ideal 1.62:1 stroke:rod ratio, which makes it revv easily while keeping excellent longevity. It's so great that some people can still turn their noses up at their 351's little brother, when late last year, a 302 saw its first 6 second timeslip in a Mustang, 6.97 in a Pro-5.0 '99 GT. I think that number alone stands testiment to the potential that is still to be realized from this well-designed small block. Oh, and Rage, he did it with a carburetor
I love making tire-smoking, daily driven Ford power, and still getting 16-18 MPG with a 3 speed transmission. I apologize to those who got excited about my 16.35 MPG post, because I forgot that my speedometer was slightly off. After recalibrating, I found I was really making 17.48 MPG.
Alright, so you guys go ahead and bring all your big brother 351 crap, because the middle child in the Windsor family (302) got the best of everything. TK

It's all good man. Don't get drawn into a conflict here. The title of the thread carries over from some previous threads here. The 48-60 forum is a bit like...... Well it's a bit like something, but we don't know what just yet.
You'd have to buy a real old truck that can't possibly be driven for two or ten years because you're short on time, money or motivation. Some of us pass the time here with friendly barbs. Deep down (really deep in some of these clowns) they know how awesome 302 LTD engines really are.
You are far more updated on the aftermarket stuff and helped me out with some of my parts selection. My 302 runs fine and you had a part of that. Thanks.
Take Care,
