Older Dodge diesel - dealer price gouging!

Wasn't sure where to post this, so i'll try here.

I'm a Ford guy, but I suppose I'd drive a Dodge - never a chevy though... Anyway...I'm in the market for an extended cab, 8' bed diesel w/ manual tranny and x-fer case.

I found a CHERRY '99 dodge at a local reputable dealer that specializes in 3/4 ton and bigger. She's only got 58000 miles, literally perfect shape - carfax approved...and it meets all my requirements.

I did a KBB and NADA search and it looks like in excellent shape it should retail around $13k.

I call the dealer - yeah, he's asking $22K !?!?!?! The sales guy gave me the song and dance about how trucks like this bring a huge premium since they have pre-emissions control engines, etc.

I see his point - I coudln't disagree w/ anything he was telling me. However, a 50% price increase? I was polite about it, but told him to enjoy the truck, some other sucker will be along.

What are other people seeing in their area? This truck certainly was in exceptional condition and warranted a premium, but i never guessed 10 grand over book value.

I guess its true, though - it's worth what someone will pay. No more, no less.

I drove clear out to Marietta, Ohio about 4 years ago to look at a '98 Dodge Quad Cab with a 12V cummins and a 5 speed.

Guy was asking $15K, I asked him if he would sell it for $10K cash, he said "Come out and let's deal."

I drove almost 4 hours to look at this truck. I get there and the front end is COMPLETELY shot (needed ball joints, tie rods, track bar bushings, the works). Additionally the bottom of the driver's side door is completely rusted out and there's a very large tear in the driver's seat. The OWNER of the dealership comes out and talks to me and then tells me he won't take a cent under $12K for the truck. I wanted to tell him where he could stick it but instead I just turned around and left.

This was a truck he sat on for AT LEAST 8 months, to my knowledge...I'm guessing he finally sent it to auction, I can't believe anyone woulda bought the piece of crap for that price.

Man, ghunt, now that really stinks. I'd have been quite ticked. I guess these older trucks can bring decent money yet.

I'm really bummed about this one. I was ready to trade my '06 F150 and come out with some extra cash (since its paid off) to buy a little econobox to hussle around to work. The pickup truck would by my hunting/hauling coal/hauling lumber weekend-get-around-truck.

Oh well. Keeping my eye out for the next one.

I'd look on Craigslist using an aggregator like Crazedlist to search regions in one shot.

I avoid dealers. Gimme a private party who needs the money over a dealer who doesn't.

all the dealers around me seem like they could care less about when they sell the truck as long as they get what theyre asking. This one place by me has had a 07 f350 xl with 70k asking 27880 for it theyve had it for close to a year and wont come down a cent on the price.

I "missed out" on a 97 PSD reg cab 4X4 5spd with under 100k miles. The truck was spotless (no rust) and asking price was 12,900. It was gone in 3 weeks. Every time I search for a Cummins I see the same '02 club cab 4X4 6spd (very clean I'll give them that) with 296,000 miles- $12,995!!! Screw this, I'm buyin another IDI!!!
