49 F1 Questions

New to the forum here, so hey everyone. Quick question for someone out there...I know someone who's selling a 49 F-1, and I went and took a look at it today, not in horrible shape, little rust here and there, missing a few trim pieces, but not banged up or anything. The owner said he bought it 24 years ago, drove it home, and it's been sitting ever since. I know there's going to be a bit of work to get her running again and I was interested in buying from this guy.

Anyways...he is asking $1500 for the truck. Just curious as to what a reasonable price would be. I love the truck and want to buy it..just don't wanna get ripped off. I'll load a few pictures when I can, forgot to bring the camera today. But based off of what I have described...can anyone help?

Welcome to FTE. Prices vary based on region and condition. Is it a V-8, six, ? Was it well optioned (heater, radio)? Are you planning on restoring or modifying? How bad and where is the rust? A picture or two might help provide a guesstimate. Most importantly, does it have a clean title? No title, no deal in my book.

Search e-bay, there are 48-50 F1s listed frequently at all kinds of prices.

Good luck.

Welcome. We need pictures. Does the guy have it advertised somewhere on the web? If so, at least post a link. I agree about the title. And more importantly than anything else, where are you located?

He says he has a title, just has to find it since the truck has been sitting for so long. I won't be buying if he doesn't have one for sure. The truck is located in southeastern NC and the rust isn't bad. There's a hole in the passenger running board, the tailgate has seen better days, but is in one solid piece, and one smaller rust hole on the driver side in front of the rear wheel well.

It has the original V8, the radio isn't in the truck, but he says he believes he has it in a shed behind the house. It does have the heater/air box still intact in the cab.

I'll be getting some pictures this week, just stopped by for a quick peek today. I'll post them as soon as possible. Thanks.

Also you mention some trim is missing... Which trim? Some of the clips are hard to find.

Hey Perry, If it helps I paid $6,000 for my 1950 F1 - barely running & barely
stopping. $1,500 looks good from here. I think some of the common issues are getting the Cab back nto good condition - Patching or replacing the Floor, Lower Doors & sills, & Cab Corners. Replacing the vacuum windshield wiper with electric. Upgrading the wiring from 6 volt to 12 volt. Upgrading the front end with a more modern independent front suspension & disc brakes vs. stock straight axle. If you enjoy this sort of wrenching then it will be fun for you.

Take a hard look at the cab - under the rug or flooring - get under the cab & look up & see what it looks like - especially the doors & corners.

Good luck - welcome to the club.

It sounds like a good find. Based on what you describe, $1500 may not be too bad, but if you can get it for a grand, I think you'd be in good shape. Let's hope he can find the title. I agree that is very important. Good luck, welcome to the forum, and keep us posted.

The floor is in pretty good shape, no obvious holes from what I can see, felt sturdy. Also, the passenger side trim on the hood and the chrome headlight ring on the drivers side are missing. Hopefully going out to grab some pictures this afternoon.

Not a bad price based on your discription. That is what I paid for mine and it ran. Had a 6 in it but that didn't matter to me. I had it hauled from Fargo N.D. to central Colorado and I had been looking for a good one for over 8 months. Picures if you can get them would help.

Fifteen hundred dollars would be a good buy in this part of the country...

The truck doesn't look all that bad. But you have an issue (depending on how you look at it). That is not a 49. It's probably a 52.

not necessarily an issue, just a hurdle. I was told 49, obviously I'm no wizard when it comes to this, so thanks for that. I did take all the info off the plate in the glove box, I know theres a way to figure it out from that right?

Yeah sure you can use the VIN number to confirm. But trust me, it's a 52 (or possibly a 51 with a 52 hood). You need to look at that title. If it does indeed say 49, there's been a title swap. But otherwise, the old truck doesn't look all that bad. I'd try to keep it below 1000 dollars if you could. The differences between the 48-50's and the 51-52's are numerous. The cabs, fenders, hoods, and obviously the grills are a few differences among many. If you do like a google image search, you'll see the differences.

Here's what I got from the numbers, F-1 with the V-8, 1952 made at the plant in Highland Park, MI. It's go the regular 3 speed, with the 4:27 rear end.
