V-10 Coolant Recomendation

I'm on a couple other forums, and on a fifth wheel forum, some guys were beating up on the 6.0 PSD guys' and a guy recomended getting rid of the factory Ford antifreeze (because of silicates)that plug the EGR,I've also heard about how critical the ph balance is in the 7.3PSD,although the V-10 is of course gas,are there any recomendation or issues running the Ford OEM anti freeze in my'06 V-10,is there anything better,Thanks

I don't know about the '06 model, but my '00 has been running fine with the O'Reily green stuff for over 100,000 miles.

My 2005 had gold from the factory, but then the only replacement antifreeze approved for Fords that I could find was clear like water.

The gassers aren't as picky about coolant. In other words, just about anything goes.

The diesel are notorious for coolant issues. Not just Ford either. Which is one of the many reasons I stay AWAY. Too much heartache.

I was wondering the same. Coming from owning a 'Burb, I knew of GM's crappy dexcool and I stayed away from that and stayed with the green stuff. I was wondering if Ford's "orange stuff" was the same.

Yeah, I drained out that Dexcool stuff from my mother-in-law's '95 Buick - in 1997. It was horrible to put it mildly. 2 years after it was put in, it looked like they had used straight water with no corrosion inhibitors.

There are all kinds of coolant formulations on the market. From my understanding GMs Dexcool is different than Fords "Gold" coolant. It may have similarities but its not the same. Mine is overdue for a change. Was planning on using Prestone but I'm thinking about putting the Ford Gold back in, its treated me well thus far.

I would put the Cat ELC in it. That's what was recommended to me because of the silicates in the Ford. The V10 might not be as picky as the 6.0, but why take the chance.

I'm still a fan of the old fashioned "green stuff" - ethylene glycol. About the only negative is that it needs to be changed every couple years.

My truck had orange looking coolant. I flushed it and replaced it with green Prestone. I haven't heard her complain yet.

Your worrying about a non issue IMO. The EGR system for the 6.0l is completely different and more complex than any EGR system ever put on the 6.8l. No coolant comes into contact with the EGR system on the 6.8l. Some of the diesel guys install coolant filters on the 6.0l and other diesels mainly to remove sand and other matter in the coolant system to keep it out of the EGR system.

The Ford coolant is a HOAT or hybrid OAT coolant which does not have the silicate content of the standard Ethylene Glycol (green) coolant. The OAT and HOAT coolants are longer life coolants that require less frequent changes. That is one reason Ford and many other OEMs use it.

Antifreeze
That's kinda strange, I had a 6.0 and put a coolant filter on it after the EGR cooler went south and was replaced under warranty. Even the Ford tech at the dealer said there were silicates in the gold coolant and to switch to Cat ELC. Nice to know about the EGR system on the 6.8, learn something new everyday!
