Question Code Readers & Programmers

Potentially dumb question - Are typical programmers (e.g. Edge, SCT, SuperChips) capable of serving the same purpose as a typical code reader? In other words, are they mutually exclusive tools, or can I just put the money that would be spent on a code reader towards a programmer?

Also, I know that Ford has a newer version of the stock program so my computer "needs to be reflashed." If I am going to add a programmer, is the dealer reflash a waste of the ~$116?

Edge (canned), Gryphon (custom tuned Edge) Power Hungry Performance - Feed your hunger for POWER!, and SCT (5startuning.com) are all capable of retrieving OBDII DTCs.

IMHO, you will still want to get your stock calibration updated BEFORE you get a tuner.

That way:

1) If you have issues with the programmer, you have a good stock program
2) Having the newer (and more up-to-date) stock calibration code helps the custom tuner write a better custom tune

If you haven't figured it out yet, I strongly recommend you go with custom tunes.

I really don't mean to hijack the thread...but...what's this about a flash for your '06...this is the first I've heard of it.
Can someone point me in the direction of information for said flash?

I will add that the dealer supposedly reflashed my ECM when the truck was less than one year old, but that was just as a reset to original (I think) because of an issue I was having. I recently had the truck in for a few minor issues that included the dealer completing a diagnostics check, from which they told me I had the "old" calibration. They did not elaborate and I did not ask. Am interested in what it entails also. Hope someone can enlighten us.

A good dealer won't reflash PCM's unless there is an issue. If everything is as it should be a reflash probably won't be necessary. A competant tuner will be able to write custom tunes for any PCM with the knowledge of the calibration code and what you want from the tune. On my 5.4L I purchased an SCT x3 with custom tunes. I was looking for a little bit of fuel economy and better throttle response and shift strategies. Did not gain much fuel mileage, but did the drivebility ever improve. The programmer will read engine codes, but most won't read tranmission or ABS codes. I would recommend an Equus Innova 3610 code reader for that. It's reasonably priced and is upgradeable for free online with a PC.
