Putting it into 4x4

I thought I heard that when you go from 2-HI into 4-HI that you need to put it in reverse in order for it to engage. Is this true? Assume that my hubs are locked at the time.

Do you have manual hubs? As long as you have the manual hubs locked in all you have to do is put it into 4hi or 4lo and your in 4x4.

1. lock in hubs
2. you can shift from 2 hi to 4hi while stopped or rolling as long as #1 is done and your not spinning the back tires faster than the front.
3. You can shift from 2hi or 4hi to 4lo as long as you are stopped I usually put my auto in park when I do this.

Yeah, they are manual hubs. I have been keeping them locked lately with the snow.

Do I need to be at a complete stop to change, or can I put it in/out of 4x4 while rolling (manual tranny, i.e., not in gear / clutch pressed in)?

EDIT: looks like huggyb covered these while I was tpying!

The backing up your referring to is for automatic hubs to disengage the 4x4.

Start using neutral when shifting into 4Lo. The trans will spin freely to allow the transfer case gears to roll into Lo range much easier than when your trans is locked by the parking pawl. This is especially true on the older gear drive transfer cases. I've actually found that its usually easier to shift in & out of 4lo when you've got the vehicle just barely moving. It gets the gears to moving, and once they've started turning, its easier to get them to mesh than when they're sitting still.

My first Bronco I think had its transfer case ruined from movement during a hi/lo shift it sheared of the spague and broke the oil pump pickup tube. I had to drive all over town to find the part to repair it so I make sure everything is stopped before I do anything. I guess I am a little overcautious, but after seeing how it actually works I am of the opinon that full stop and park is the better option for the hi/lo shift with a BW1356. Do as you like.

It should not allow you to shift from 2Hi or 4Hi into 4Low while moving, if it does something is out of adjustment...

As long as the front hubs are locked, you can shift from 2wd to 4hi at any time or speed. Just make sure you dont do it while the rear tires are slipping on snow or ice and the front tires are sitting still, as it will grind then go bang.

With a manual shift case, there is nothing to keep you from shifting it into any position at any speed. With my truck i can actually leave the manual tranny in gear while moving and shift from 4lo to 4hi by placing the t-case in nuetral and matching the rpms of the engine/trans to the t-case before returning the tcase to 4hi. It takes alot of practice and i do not recommend it. If you mess it up, you will likely break something.

My recommended shift sequence for 4hi to 4lo is to roll slowly with the transmission in N and smoothly shift from 4hi to 4lo without stopping at N on the t-case. Although i almost never have any issue when shifting from 4hi to 4lo or back while sitting still either.
