Garage door opener and calm customer service

So, the garage door opener that was in my Tahoe, Sierra, Lincoln Continental, MKX and now my Super Duty all look identical but apparently are all different manufacturers.

I programmed my SD and like others here on FTE it doesn’t work well.
Sometimes it will activate on the first push some times 10-20 pushes.

Called Car2 customer service and here is what I learned.

“What opener do you have”?
Genie Excelerator Series II
“I need the model”
I just told you
“No, I need the model off of the remote”
I thought you wanted the opener model?
“I’m just trying to help you”
OK – back outside give remote model number.

“OK, you have a Genie rolling code opener”
Yes, I told you that already.

“sir, I’m just trying to help you”

“You have to program the truck with the front bumper 10’ from the garage door”.
I pulled up about 5’ and tell her so. “No sir – it has to be exactly 10’. OK, do I need to get out my tape measure?
“Sir, I am only trying to help you program your truck”.

OK I am 10’ give or take 1-2”.

Re-program the opener step by step as instructed.
Still same issue.

“Trying lowering the visor 30 degrees and re-try”
OK, I think it is at 30 degrees but not exactly sure, should I get my protractor out?

“sir …………..Lets do the other door”
No, it is snowing and I am not taking the Bentley out of the garage (no, I do not have one, but the table saw is in the way).

“OK, it would be best to program the first door to the left button”
Huh, OK, why is that?
“Because the opener likes to have the left button programmed first”
How does my garage door opener know which button I am pressing?
“Sir, ………………..”

Fine, I am not doing the 2nd door, it is snowing. Lets pretend I only have one door.

“OK, I am going to send you a module to plug in and program”.
Great, can you just send two, both doors are the same opener.
“No I can’t do that, we have to try programming it first”.
They are the same openers, purchased the same day, installed the same day with the same lot number, just send me two.

“sir, ……….
I can only send one”.

Fine – send it.

What I don’t get is the Homelink in my Tahoe and Continental worked a hundred feet from the garage. The opener in the MKX (wife’s car) works about as well as the Super Duty, gave up with it and just used the opener’s remote.
The opener factory installed in my motorcycle works from about a half block away.

The opener in the wife's '05 Mountaineer sucks too.

If you're gonna have that option, at least make it work. The technology's only been around for 80 years.

That was too funny! I know in some call centers they have people reading off of scripts and it sounds like the person you had develop their own quirky one. When I programmed mine, it went great. The garage for my truck has a Genie, my wife's is a Chamberlin and the third bay is an old Stanley with the switches. Was able to program all 3 without incident.

I do find it does take a bit on my bay to get it to open the door.

I had a bitchin time doing mine until I re read the book and realized that I was skipping a step. After correcting the procedure it worked the 1st time, and now has been working reliably for about 6mos. It activates the Genie opener at about 150'.

This is good stuff but I have to tell you just the opposite of what I experienced when I called in. The person I spoke with was amazingly patient!

To add a bit; yes I believe the CS was trying to help, was patient and probably was reading off a script with a little ad lib.

On the plus, she had no discernible accent, kind of sounded like my neighbor

It is not rocket science programming these things and I have multiple openers programmed. Just gets to be a pain when you start "rolling" over your limit trying to get them working and you have to go back to the beginning with - say - remote #1.

There must be an issue, otherwise the simple fix would not be "I'll send you a module to plug in".

I already have a similar module for my motorcycle, now finding room to plug it in...............

I put a quad outlet in just so I would not have to use adapters and it is full, garage door opener, HD remote module, drop light and 1500 pound winch.

try holding in your button until you see the door move. I used a frequency detector on mine and it didn't start to send the signal until about a 1/2 second after it was pushed. I have the timing down now ( how long to hold the button ) and mine works much better.

I had an 02 and an 2008 F150 with the branded "HomeLink" system. My wife's Honda van has the HomeLink system. All of them worked perfectly and had incredible range. I don't know if you guys have noticed, but the system in the 2011 F250's is not branded "Homelink". It is a cheaper copy. It is supposed to have equal functionality but obviously it doesn't. I found the programming to problematic and the range to be about half of what my 08 F150. Personally, I think it is a case of Ford trying to save money and getting an inferior component. The true Homelink System has been around a while and is owned by Johnson Controls and is a great product. I am not sure who the manufacturer of the system is in these '11 F250's.
