90 Heater/temp Gauge Prob

My 90 model ranger has the 2.9l and just recently I have
replaced the water pump, t-stat, heater core. I have now been
trying to get the heater to work right. It seems to take a long
time for the engine to come up to temp, and the heater will only blow slightly warm air for a few seconds, the temp gauge during the same time will rise up to just past middle of normal then drop
down to low normal. Do I have an air pocket, bad t-stat or what
any help would be appreciated.
