Truck has issues
I need some help with my truck. I'm still very new to this diesel thing, but I know there is a problem, as well as two friends of mine who are into the older IDI diesels.
When I look into my stacks, the black coating on the inside is NOT black and sooty (like dry powder).... it's a glossy black. When you scrap it off with a finger nail you can mold it in your fingers. Kinda like play-doo.
Also, when it's warm sitting at idle it smokes blue.
When you rev the engine up to around 2000-2500 it starts to billow blueish white smoke. Nothing close to black.
When at idle the RPMs seem to fluctuate up and down slightly. Maybe 100 rpms up and down. But not all the time.
When I was flying up the highway the engine was at a constant 2500 rpms at around 65-70. I noticed the sound of the turbo was going up and down also. The sound didn't hold constant like the speed and rpms. The road was consistantly an uphill grade too.
-----------------------------------------------------------
One friend said the injector O-rings MAY be bad. (Blue smoke at idle)
The other friend said the waste gate MAY be acting up. (turbo changing sound at highway speeds)
Neither knew why it smoked blueish/white when rev'ing it up. OR why the exhaust was NOT black and DRY, but glossy....
Thanks for your help, I need it. I don't have many local friends or resources for these questions.

Does your fuel bowl/filter look crappy? Could be orings, does it stutter some when revving up in neutral like you did when it blows smoke?
There is no wastegate on these turbos so that is not an issue. I can't help much with the turbo thing except have you looked at the wheel? Any dusting or play in it? Some side to side is ok as long as it doesn't contact the housing. No in/out should be there.
Maybe you're leaking oil into the exhaust, that's why you see glossy in your stacks. Pull the downpipe off and see if there is oil there.
No problem with the help, that is what the site is for. More smarter guys should help soon too, hard to say with the holiday..

blue smoke indicates oil being burnt, my truck now stumbles from a free rev till about 3k and clears up, my stacks arent oily yet thoe. i have newer orings, i may have nicked an injector oring the few times i put them in and out. but man oh man does mine roll blue smoke when cold! how ever! i found my fuel filter to be covered in oil, but the fuel bowl was spotless. so i need to figure out what that means

I'll check the condition of the fuel inside the bowl and the filter with weekend. Yes, I believe you could call it a stutter when rev'ed up outta gear. Never took it higher to see if it stops or clears up.
I'll check the turbo also.
I didn't know these trucks didn't have wastegates? There is no bypass for excess boost? hmmmm

A wastegate isn't needed. Excess boost can escape back through the intake. Stock these engines only make about 15-18psi of boost and the stock turbo can handle about 35psi max so not really a need to protect it from over-boost when it's stock.
I agree it could be injector o-rings. Also check the coolant for oil in it, check the oil for coolant in it, and check the fuel bowl for oil. Hopefully it isn't a head gasket going out.
