F250 transmission/exhaust rattle?
I'm looking for some help. I recently purchased the last 09' F250 5.4(new) on the lot. Hell of a deal when it sits on the lot that long by the way......Anyway....I waited 1000k before towing with it, then I towed 2 cubic yards of mulch. That is when I noticed a slight rattle coming from underneath.
Well, I began to pay more attention and this is when it happens. The transmission has to get up to temp. Once at temp and you accelerate you will hear a rattle at 1900rpm which sounds like BB's in a can. I played around a little and noticed you will get the rattle in Neutral and Park all at 1900rpm. It happened idling once but then went away.
Now, I drive a crown vic police interceptor for a living(take a guess what i do) and it was recalled due to the heat shields on the cats having a rattle also. So that is what I assumed it was. Took it to the dealer, they said they found a loose shield, fixed it.........nope........still doin it.
So I put it on a lift and had an exhaust specialist look at it. With it just idiling you could hear the sound faintly coming from the larger portion of the transmission(no clue what part of the transmission this is) so anyway now I'm concerned it could be a transmission issue.
The transmission shifts smoothly, not all the time sometime's harder than others but I figured that because it's a truck.
Does anyone have any idea's or suggestions. I just hate having to keep going to the dealer and have them thinking I'm nuts.
Thanks in advance!!!

When I had my 04 Super Duty I had a similer raddle and it ended up being the shield on the front of the transmission where the torque converter and engine meet. A little foam padding and it was all fixed. I have read other posts on here who had the same raddle as I did and that is how I found out about it. Simple 5 minute fix.

i bet its the inspection cover rattling...
quite common among super duties actually..
give the bottom area of it a slight twist with a screwdriver to create a bit more gap..should fix it.
do a search for "inspection cover rattle" you should find some threads discussing the problem/fix i bet.

Torque converter Rattling?
I have a 2001 F-250, w/V10 71000 miles. I have been noticing this rattling sound when I shift to reverse or drive, but not in park or neutral. I just went to my dealer, they said that they have a service bulliten out on this and that the torque converter is the problem. So I have an appointment to get it replaced. Luckily I bought an extended warrenty which will cover the replacement. But reading here I think I should pull the inspection sheild and see if it still rattles.
What do you think? Is this a common problem with the converter.
Thanks,
Shawn R.

carltonwebb, I hope it is only the cats. I can live with the noise if that is all it is. My concern is that the rattle is from within the tranny. My rattle seems to be at 750 RPM. What trucks did you experience this on? I have 2010 F350 screw. 5.4 auto 4x4. It is hard to duplicate at times, and I am afraid the dealer is going to dismiss it saying they don't hear it.
