SOHC 4.0 5 speed in an OHV 4.0 ?
Has anyone swapped a SOHC 5 speed in place of an OHV 5 speed? The research I have done says all of the bolt holes line up except for one. Is it possible to run the later model tranny in an older Ranger? I have found a 5 speed from a wrecked 2002 Ranger with 60,000 miles and I want to put in my 1995 Ranger with a worn out 245,000 mile tranny. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Too much trouble. The 5R55 series will swap to some degree, but for starters, the computer which controls the tranny wouldn't know what to do with it. Secondly, why not rebuild you old trans and be set for another 245,000 miles? Check the history on the 5R55 series, you will see that many of them start having problems long before then.
I would just rebuild the old one rather than trying the junkyard game. Was this trans cared for? Who knows? Was it damaged in the wreck? Who knows? Too many unknowns, you might as well rebuild the donor, and that defeats the purpose.

The 5R55 series is an automatic, right? I didnt think there were any computer controls in a manual tranny. Sorry for my ignorance. I have called around to tranny shops and most of them say they cant give me an exact quote till they pull it apart and see what has to be replaced. I assume that it is going to be expensive because it is noisy in all gears except fourth. Syncros, gears, main shaft, counter shaft, bearings probably need to be replaced. My dad has a Ranger with a 3.0 he paid 750 to have his 5 speed rebuilt and that was with me doing all of the labor of the removal and reinstall.

If you already have a manual and you are swapping a manual trans from another vehicle thats a different story, the fit should be almost perfect. However you may find mounting brackets, sensor locations, etc that have changed. Better getting a trans from a similar year. Also what kind of fluid are you running in your trans, the wrong fluid will cause a lot of noise.

To the OP, I wish I had an answer for you, but it appears all anyone else has is criticism.
Maybe, possibly ask this in the transmission forum

Hopefully someone will actually have knowledge of whether it will work or not.
