5.4 to 6.8 V10 swap

I have a 2000 f350 with a 5.4 auto

I have re-greared my axles to 5.38s to compensate for the 44" boggers. When I go wheeling, I always use 4lo and it has plenty of power. Around town its fine, but then I get on the hiway, it barely has enough power to keep it rolling at 100 km/h in overdrive. Most of the time, I turn the OD off to keep it from downshifting every 15 seconds.

All I have done to the motor are a K&N filter and a custom 3" catback with a 3" high flow cat. There really arent that many mods I can do the the 5.4 to get some decent power. E-fans would help( 15-20 rwhp i've read) but other than that there isnt too much out there to give me the power i need/want. I dont really want to supercharge it, I will just get mud in the intercooler and belt system.

This leads me to the V10 swap, It would be the easiest swap because it would bolt right in. I would probably just look for a 2v V10, as I dont know if a 3v wiring harness/computer will work with my 4r100 and the rest of my trucks sensors.

Anyways, any sugestions/input on V10 vs V8 performance and if this is a worth while swap.

P.S...I do not want to swap to Diesel!!!!..too heavy

That truck looks pretty badass.

Did you do anything to correct the pcm and speedo for the large tires? Any idea what rpm you run in OD at 60mph or 100kmh?

Swapping to a PI 2V 6.8l will give you an extra 50hp and and extra 75tq and is fairly straightforward. I would add a set of Doug Thorley Tri-Y headers and a tuner with a custom tune (probably more of a tow tune with those tires) The stock y-pipe and manifolds on that year truck leave a lot to be desired and the Thorley headers add noticebly more low end power.(I have a set on my truck)

I only used my GPS...when my speedo ready 75, i'm doing 105..hahaha
At that speed...i'm just under 2000rpm...same speed in 3rd is about 2700rpm.

What size is the thorley Y pipe? will my 3"cat/catback be big enough

The difference in speedo readings to GPS actual reading should also tell you the 5.38 gears were not enough to get you back to stock. Try some deeper gears first and at least get the engine/gearing ratio back to what it was stock before swapping engines.

That is the highest gear ratio I can get.

Also the speed sensor reads off of the ring gear in the rear diff....No matter what ratio I put in, it will always only read how fast the axle shafts are spinning. i would have to get a speedcal or a tune to fix the speedo

I think when I said 75 reads 105 i may have caused some confusion, as I ment to say 75 KM/H reads 105 KM/h which is 46mph to 60 mph

I feel certain that you know that you will have to have the ECM and all of the under hood wiring as well as the trans wiring. The best way would be to buy the donor complete and have it handy so that when you need a part it is right there. I think you will need the 4R100 trans or whatever is with the V10 do do a good job.

The 5.4 comes with the 4r100 as well..it should just need under hood wiring and a ecm

I think I would check with Ford or a tranny rebuilder as there could be heavier duty parts in the V10 trans to take the added HP and torque.

Your rpm isn't too bad for those type of tires. Turning 2200+ rpm at 60 in OD would be better however as you said you got the steepest gear set. A stock truck with 32" tires and 3.73s will run a hair under 2k rpm at 70mph.

yes indeed....My truck had 4.10 gears stock and i think it was just over 2000 rpm with the stock tires. This is why i want to do the swap...i need the power at 2000 rpms
