What year does the 351w come with roller hyd lifters?

hey guys, im trying to figure out which block to start with for a project. From looking around on the internet i think the 94 to 96 351 come with the hyd roller lifters but im not sure. I want to buy a stroker 393cu kit and convert this this motor to carburator and put it in my bronco. any info on these 351 would be great. thanx

1994 and up motors with the F4TE block casting number, you will also find this motor in '97 HD trucks(8500lb+ GVWR) as the old truck was carried over another year until the new SuperDuty was introduced.

Supposedly some late production 1993 trucks had the roller blocks installed as well. There may also be marine engines that used it, you could research on the boating sites about that.

How do you tell if the 93 had roller in it?

Well you can start by checking for the F4TE cylinder case casting number. That will confirm that it is "roller ready", i.e. has the taller lifter bores and bosses to hold roller hardware.

To see if those parts are actually installed, I suppose you will have to actually look inside the engine. With the aid of a bright pinpoint flashlight you can remove a valve cover, and shine light down a pushrod hole to look for the yoke around the lifter, characteristic of roller setups.

Easiest way to find out is if it has mass air or sd. If it has mass air, chances are it has a roller

Its SD. 1993 Bronco. My 94 F150 was SD though, and i was told it was roller.

It was mentioned some 1993 351w where roller to. Thats why i was asking.

Casting number is above starter motor. So to view it you have to look from underneath, and possibly remove the starter. A mirror and flashlight might help to see it without removing starter motor.

You may be able to pull off a valve cover and look down into the block where the pushrods are. If it has a roller cam, you might be able to see the dogbones and spider with a flashlight.

As long as you have the F4TE block, you can use the factory roller lifters, spider and dogbones from any 5.0 truck or mustang.

The roller cam does reduce parasitic friction in the motor by quite a bit so if the only engine difference is the cam type(grinds are similar) the advantage would go to the roller setup but there wouldn't be much difference in power output between them.

I didn't say that it dictated, In my experience that's the easiest way to know. If it has mass air, it came with a roller block.
The lifters, cam, and dogbones will work on a 351, the pushrods, dogbone retainer will not work from a 5.0

So if it doesnt have mass air it could have either one? Is that just because the year they started using mass air?
