F-100 223 engine water in oil
1957 F-100 pick-up less than 3000 miles on over hall pick-up had not run in over 7 years. Just recently started to get pick-up running again. dROVE PICK-UP seven miles, turn around to go back home noticed the temperture gauge was not working, started smelling antifreeze, pick-up was having a hard time picking up speed noticed it would not drive faster than 55 miles per hour. Pulled over to shoulder pick-up stalled, would not start, pulled pick home poped cluch it started several times would not stay running. I charged battery and pick-up started, noticed alot of smoke comming out of exaust pipes, truck stalled, I noticed a big oil puddle under where the engine is on ground. I also noticed water bubbles in oil dip stick. any suggestions ideals will be greatly appreceated.

Whoa, before you go tearing everything apart lets make sure what might be wrong. 223 (IMO) where susceptible to condensation in the oil, ….lousy ventilation system and it was sitting.
What color was the smoke, white (coolant) or blue (oil) black (fuel) ? I take it the rad was empty or low, was the oil level very high (over filled)? I would strongly suggest doing what is called a cylinder leak down test but that is just fancy name for putting compressed air in the cylinders (one at a time) with the valves closed, if it is a coolant leak/crack and with the rad full it will do a impersonation of old faithful or a least big air bubbles in the rad.

If antifreeze got into the bearings I am not sure that it is necessarily a death sentence (unless it is seized of course) back in the sixties Ford made a product that for the life of me I can’t remember the name of, but Number Dummy will, that flushed out the crankcase including antifreeze I think.

I would lean toward the head gasket unless the engine sat with water in it and possibly froze and cracked the block or head. If that happened it would probably pop a frost plug. As far as antifreeze in the oil I don't believe it is as hard on the bearings as it once was. I know at one time it was a real concern but in the past ten years I've seen a fair number of Cat. engines dump lots of coolant into the oil when the water pump gets bad and it doesn't seem to hurt the bearings. I know a number of years ago it would be freak city but I think the chemistry of antifreeze has changed. If it isn't to hard to drop the oil pan pull a couple of bearing caps and check the bearings. Good Luck.
