1966 VIN# decode Information

Need some help decoding my VIN
1966 F-100.
VIN#: F10YR820256
I am trying to figure the engine--some years have the Y but in all my internet research I can't seem to figure the Y on the '66. Assuming it's the 351?
Also is there a way to figure out the DSO?
Mine says 74.
Any help for a new Ford guy would be awesome!

Welcome to FTE. The 351 truck engine was not available as early as 1966. What was available was a 352 cubic inch FE V8 (the 351 is a Windsor), and it was the only V8 available in the F100 for 1965 - 67. The Warranty Plate code for the 352 was "D" for the 1965 model year and "Y" for the 1966 - 67 model years. How 'bout we give you the full decode: F10 = 2 wheel drive F100 truck. Y = 352 cubic inch 2 bbl FE V8. R = San Jose, California assembly plant. 820256 = assembled in February, 1966. 129 = wheelbase in inches. J = exterior color Rangoon Red. F100 = half ton truck with 5000 pound Gross Vehicle Weight rating. E81 = Red upholstery (you'll get further information from others on this). A = New Process 4 speed manual transmission. 08 = Ford 9 inch non-limited slip rear axle with 3.50 gears. 5000 = GVW rating in pounds. 172 @ 4000 is the engine's NET horsepower rating and the RPMs where achieved (GROSS HP is rated at 208 which is what's on the air cleaner decal). 74 = Seattle, the District Sales Office from which the truck was ordered. Your truck was NOT special ordered. Keep in mind, previous owner's may have altered your truck from the way it was delivered, but at least this gives you a starting point. Hope you enjoy your new truck.

On sale day 352/360 engines magically become 390's!
Mid 1970's 390 would be from a F100/350, because 1971 was the last year 390's were installed in cars.
360/390 factory installed in 1968/76 F100/350.
Measure the stroke to determine engine size: 352/360: 3.50" / 390: 3.78."
If the 4 speed is from a truck, it will be either a Warner T-18 or a New Process 435 (NP435).
T-18 shift lever retainer cap threads off/on.
See pic below: NP435 shift lever retainer cap (7220) has two notches, is retained to the shift tower with two pins (7221).

I'm also somewhat new hear, I haven't been on the site much since I sold my F150 a few years ago. I bought a 1966 F100 step side short box off line. I haven't seen the truck in person yet and won't until I get back from overseas in October. I'd like to know more about my truck.

The VIN when decoded, don't tell you much. Post a pic or all the codes stamped on the Warranty Plate, riveted to the left door below the latch.

911Tom, would you mind typing in your wheelbase, color, model, GVWR Lbs. and DSO? I can guess that your HP is 172 and RPM is 4000.
In 1964-1971 they actually had an F100 (5,000 Lbs.), F101 (4,200 Lbs.) and F102 (5,000 Lbs - state of Pa.) - all different GVWR Lbs. than each other, or Pa. I have not delved into years prior to 1964 for this minutiae.
And then 1972 changed all that up again and added more models, but luckily we don't have to concern ourselves with that here.
